Has anyone every fully cured their GERD?

Hi, I'm a 26 yr old male - I was diagnosed with non-errosive GERD just over a year ago. It started as a constant burning sensation behind the breast bone but that went away after i started taking PPI therapy (losec then nexium when losec stopped working a few months back). The symptoms were easy to live with until recently. In the last few weeks i've developed the sensation of a lump in my through and on occasion I wake up with a sore throat from acid coming up at night.

I always assumed that the problem would eventually go away and have only now realised that it will not. I'm now starting to look at alternative solutions - I've purchased slippery elm bark tabs and digestive emzymes - I'm also going to get DGL Licorice as I do not want to be on PPIs forever.

So, my question is: has anyone been able to cure their GERD? Having read some of the posts here it sound like people learn to manage it rather than cure it. I really dislike the idea of surgery so am prepared to do whatever it takes but the inspiration of someone else that has sucessfully done the first would make it way more doable.

I look forward to hearing your stories/suggestions

Welcome! Unfortunately for me the only thing that has "cured" my GERD has been the Nissen surgery. I haven't had any significant reflux since I had the first surgery in June of '06. I don't exactly mean it is a "cure", but it has kept me basically symptom free and I needed something I knew would keep the acid down since I also have Barretts.
I realize this isn't the path you are wanting to go down and I am sure there will be someone along shortly that has had great success with other therapies. I just am not one who has, Sorry.

Welcome to healingwell.com. GERD is a chronic disease and unfortunately there is no cure for it at this time. On the good side, it is very common and can be managed quite easily for most people. Talk to your dr. again and he might want to prescribe something else for you. I have been taking Prilosec 20mg. once per day for over 12 years and it has been working quite well for me with minimal side effects. Good luck and hope you get to feeling better.

Hello and welcome to HealingWell.  I am much like Gentleman K.  I do not have severe sx and I manage with the same medication. 

I do know the members that have had the surgery do quite well after some time for healing.  These members have had GERD of the worse kind so I am not sure just where you fit as far as being a candidate for the surgery.

I do believe that you would have to go through a fair amount of testing before they would feel you need the surgery.

I am glad you found us and do keep posting.  We love to have new members join us.

hey there- I have just reached the month mark for my recovery of the Nissen laproscopic surgery. My Dr was very knowledgeable- he actually designed it and requested the surgeon general permission to start doing it and then trained other surgeons! I have had great results! I thought it was crazy to have surgery for a cough but he said that within 10-15 yrs there is a very high chance of developing esophogial cancer if the surgery wasn't done. I did also have a hiatial hernia. I did some research- and you need to check out your medication. google Pump inhibitors + carcinoid many dr's are not up on this particular kind of cancer. With extended use of proton pump inhibitors (certain medications- I think Nexium is one of them) there is a link to carcinoid cancer of the stomach. Check the label on the box most of the meds aren't meant to be a maintainer for long term. Most people haven't heard of this link- please read up on it! My mother in law met with a carcinoid specialist from New Orleans and he verified that there is a link and talked about it in depth!

I would consider myself pretty much cured, yes. I stopped my PPI regimen for pH monitoring and the symptoms disappeared. I have slowly worked up to eating acidic and spicy foods. Turns out the PPI may have been hurting me.

Relief can come in unexpected ways. I wish you luck. I was also 26 when this started.

I am 99% cured. What remains is a slight sensitivity on my chest when I drink stuff like hot chocolate milk. Otherwise I am doing fine without PPI, antacids. I still sleep elevated and avoid spicy and stimulative stuff. It has become a habit of mine.

Very few of us would be brave enough to claim to be cured even if we hit a long lasting good phase. If you'd asked me in 2007, I'd have said "Yes! I cured mine with DGL!". It came back 3 years later though and responds to very little - the drugs keep a lid on it, just.

Some people manage to get their GERD under very good control so that if they stick to a particular protocol things are good - like the Koufman diet, other low fat diets, going vegan etc.

To me, cured means being able to take in so much red wine that I need a big mug of coffee to sober up - and having no heartburn or reflux afterwards!! I would, however, settle for one glass of red wine . . .

I am fairly new to all these gerd symptoms and new to this site. I was diagnosed about a month ago after I found out I had hpylori an infection in my stomach and after being on triple anibiotic therapy. I have some questions if anyone can help. I started waking up with a sore throat about a week ago but now for three days it is a horrible sore throat and now I'm.coughing and its kind of flemy and hurts my chest when I cough has anyone else had this with gerd? I'm thinking it can also be a cold but not congested really or anything else just bad sore throat and cough. I have an appt with my gi Dr next Friday but just wanted to see what else I can find out about this. Any responses would be greatly appreciated :-)

I wonder if anyone knows more stories of GERD sufferer having fully recovered from GERD. Would you mind sharing?

I have two.

1. My sister's colleague got GERD in her age of 23. It was a stressful year in her university. She took medication for 1.5 years, diet very carefully and recovered. She never had GERD symptoms after that. According to her, the trick was when she felt the acid acts up, she took biscuits to calm it down. She is now a mum in her 30's with kids.

2. Babies can have GERD because of pre-matured development of LES. The condition will go away when they grow up.

I have a friend whose GERD comes and goes. When it comes, he takes Pepcid for a week and it goes away for months, sometimes years.

I also have some friends that I suspect of having it but don't want to diagnose them... for instance, I have a friend who gets heartburn every time she eats cucumbers and bananas and can feel the heartburn rising from her stomach, up her throat, and into her mouth. She avoids those foods and is normal otherwise.

there is a cure ,when one understands what causes it the treatmeant is straight forward.when i was cured of mine ,my therapist told me that tension held around the diaphram restricts the fascia movement around the stomach.She released all around there and massaged my adomen.I had 4 treatmeants whatch what i ate for a month ... no more reflux

perhaps you want to share more? like how long have you had GERD? Is your therapist a Chiropractic or Osteopath? what is the name of the manipulation? how long have you been clear of GERD after the manipulation?

i had reflux for 7 months , she was a massage therapist who used fascia release and massage.To much tension around the nerve plexus solar can cause promblems with the stomach.Releasing this tension and learning to breath deeper into the abdomen , and not the chest . for one month i watched what i ate and was fine , that was one and half years ago.

I know abdominal breathing is beneficial and can help GERD.
I do feel tension in my belly frequently, I think I can give it a try.

your tension will be most down the side of the six pack. I found massaging in circular motion in a clock wise around the diaphram and up the sides of the rectus abdominus . We are energy so holding negative tension or emotion will affect the body. We get 95% of our energy from breathing........breath well its free!!
