Hi Pat,Welcome to Healing Well! It sounds as if you're in the right place! I've never had a throat infection caused by reflux, but I did have many lung infections. I have had asthma all my life, but it became uncontrollable about 2003 or 2004. I was on high doses of steroids, many antibiotics for infections, and was not healthy. Finally after about 5-6 years of struggle, I had the Nissen fundoplication surgery in 2009, and my lung health finally improved.
You have LPR, which is atypical GERD...often it is accompanied by little or no actual heartburn. While typical GERD includes lots of reflux and even food and acid in the mouth, most of the damage done to LPR sufferers is done without their knowledge-silently.
Actually, your sinuses can be affected by reflux as well. It can even cause ear pain! You might be able to do some research and see if you can find what GI doc or ENTs in your area specialize in the treatment of LPR. If you have an actual throat infection, an antibiotic is probably the key to getting it cleared up...however you can have lots of mucous caused by irritation as well. The throat makes mucous to coat and protect itself.
There are lots of LPR sufferers on this forum, so I expect others will be by to share their experience with you as well. If it's esophageal irritation that is bothering you, Carafate suspension can be very helpful. It's a prescription drug that is very benign and doesn't really cause any side effects. It coats the esophagus and stomach and aids in healing. I have a reactive stomach and find it helpful...I always keep it on hand.
Good luck! I hope you get feeling better soon!
Best wishes,
Denise
