Does anybody have trouble breathing with acid reflux/ gerd??

Yes i had also trouble of breathing , actually let me tell you my Point of view about this .... when stomach produces gas or acid , it come upwards from stomach to throat .... and when we breath the direction is downwards ... when gas and breathing collides with each other , we feel shortness of breath ..

Yes it can happen. I thought I couldn't exhale fully and went to have my lungs listened to and they were clear. Turned out to be anxiety about the reflux....I calmed myself and was ok.
Not saying yours is this, but it's possible! Good luck!

Sometimes it feels like i cant breath, but i think its just inflammation of te esophagus because i can take a deep breath if u make myself, it just feels tight

Dear Andy...yes, reflux can affect breathing as the acid aspirates into the lungs. It can also cause pneumonia if left untreated.

I have the same issue with reflux which is particularly bothersome as I also have asthma. I'm on Nexium 40mg daily with Pepcid AC and regular antacids for breakthrough. There are times (like now) when I need to add my rescue inhaler as the acid meds are not enough. Even so sometimes the periods of relief are short and I need to take more puffs than I should.

I'm having a particularly bad flare the past few days and am seeing my GI on Friday. I'll let you know if I find out anything else and/or new about the acid/breathing connection.

I did before my surgery.
My lungs were a wreak. It did damage my epitglottis.

Hi supermom,

I had very bad asthma and breathing problems due to reflux.  2kitty2, before my Nissen surgery my lungs were in horrible shape.  I was on high doses of inhaled steroids, intermittent prednosone, and was using my nebulizer several times a day.  After my lungs had time to heal post-op (I had a lung infection pre/post surgery) my lungs were finally healthy again for the first time in five or six years.

Do you have a hiatal or other type of hernia along with the acid reflux? I noticed an amazing difference in my ability to take a deep breath after I had TIF surgery for the reflux and hiatal hernia repair. It was like night and day....and such a huge improvement that I noticed the breathing better even before I noticed that the acid reflux was gone after surgery. My doctor said that the hernia was large enough to actually not allow my lung to inflate all the way.

An incredible extra gift along with no more acid or PPI's! I hope you get it figured out soon as being aware that you are not breathing right is weird and worrisome! Kathleen
