Hi there - I'm new here - hoping I can find some answers as I'm really miserable just now and just want things to stop hurting...

Have had GERD for a number of years... taking panteloc 40 mg twice daily and now my doc has put me on dicetel 100 mg 3 times a day which is causing me agonizing acid pain - anyone have this problem? He put me on the dicetel because of nagging right upper quadrant pain - I no longer have a gall bladder so they think if they can get my bowel moving better, it might help the pain. I've had duodenal and esophogeal ulcers in the past but right now my last scope just showed irritation from the acid. I also take Sulcrate liquid when the acid is bad but with the dicetel, the Sulcrate doesn't even touch the pain - can't eat anything.... makes me nauseous and acid worse... eyes

Anyone have this combination of issues at all - or any answers?

Hi divamama,

Welcome to Healing Well!  I'm so sorry to hear about your pain!  I don't know a thing about dicetel, but I'm quite certain your doctor wouldn't want you to continue with a drug that was causing you that much discomfort.  Have you called to report our symptoms?  There's no way it's helping you if it's creating more pain!

 

Wish I could offer more help.  I'd call the doc and insist on getting off the drug if I were you.  It can't be helping if it's hurting that much.  Maybe somebody will be by soon who has more specific information.

I'm new too and posted earlier today with my long story :) I'm not familiar with the drugs you're on but everything else is the same, no gallbladder, scope showed gastritis from the acid, chest pain and horrible back pain, and I'm going for a chest CT scan Wednesday. I started wondering if my PPI which is omeprazole just isn't working any more.

the drug name is pantoprazole - panteloc is the brand name in Canada - dicetel - is often used for IBS or gallbladder issues - but I don't have a gallbladder - IBS - not so convinced this is an issue I have - irregular - or nervous - but not so much IBS. I will discontinue the dicetel on my own - it's brutal!! I'll also contact my doc of course - not just ditching drugs without consultation but this much acid cannot be good no matter what the drug is supposed to be doing!! I can't deal with it and I have to teach in the am....

OkYankee - my hubby was on omeprazole - he didn't find it strong enough either - he had to switch to Nexium and found it more effective. shakehead

I was on Nexium initially, back in 2007 but my insurance won't cover it. I really liked it and I think I did a better job than omeprazole, at least for me.

Hi divamama,

That's a good plan, I think.  There are certain drugs--so far antibiotics--that increase the acid in my stomach trememdously.  I avoid taking them as much as possible.  I know exactly how you feel.  Even when you get off the drug, don't expect to feel perfect immediately.  It will take time to heal.  Eat carefully...smooth foods, no spice, acid, alcohol.  Baby your stomach as it heals.

OkYankee - Have you tried Losec? Another good drug - not Prilosec but Losec - or the one I'm on - both way better than Omeprazole - my recollection from my doc is that Omeprazole is the sort of first level drug then Nexium and Losec and Panteloc - are kind of a step up.... just a vague recollection from our journeys with Reflux...

Hi Divamama no I haven't heard of Losec but I'll look into it. It's pretty annoying but I'm limited to what my insurance will cover. They actually think all PPI's are the same...ugh

Prilosec and Losec = Omeprazole, just a brand name. One and the same drug , Priosec and Losec are
just the marketing names for the drug Omeprazole.

wow - that's surprising - oh wait - that's right - I was on losec - and had to switch to Nexium - and then to Panteloc - now taking the panteloc twice a day.... prilosec is the over the counter version isn't it?
