I must say that my recovery thus far has been far greater than anticipated. I'm now on soft foods and that is going well. My roughest day was about 4 days post op with pain, nausea, uncomfortable swallowing. On my follow up my staples were removed & replaced with butterfly bandages. I return to the doc next week & will be upgrading and introduced to regular diet. I have lost about 9 pounds (smiles). I'm most looking forward to the tub, I'm not a shower kinda gal. I will say I prefer Post Nissen recovery to the misery before the surgery.

So glad you are doing well, I am 14 days post op and had my post op check up yesterday and have been released for travel (motorhome) and flying in March. No need to return to see surgeon and can eat whatever I can chew to liquid. Eating soft foods and smoothies. I have had chicken cooked in crockpot for hours which was easy to chew and tasted wonderful!

I have had gas pains the past couple days really bad so I am going to stick to smoothies today and see if that helps. Interestingly the first gas pains I have had have been in the past 2 days - guess I got to frisky with my diet.

I am very pleased and surprised at my speedy recovery since I am 67. I did have a dehydration problem at 7 days post op and was in the ER but I think it was a result of the wrap swelling peaked that day and I had trouble swallowing all day. I think my surgeon was very talented and I have to attribute my recovery to his skill.

At 10 days post op I went with my husband to Ft. Leavenworth Harney gym and walked 3 miles at 3.5 mph so with no ill effects.

Hope you have as uneventful recovery as I have experienced. God speed. Barb

Mulligan - can you describe the gas pain in more detail? Does it feel like heartburn, or is it like stomach irritation resulting in flatulence?

I too had gas pains and take Mylanta for it. I had thrush and that was a tad annoying but I brushed my tongue in peroxide and it ook care of that. My surgeon was excellent! I can not be more thrilled with him. I had surgery at Ft.Stewart, GA.

Gas pains for me were anything from flatulence to when you would normally burp. I have burped a few times but more often have hiccups. I haven't had any heartburn sensations.

The gas pain was more like the pain of heartburn (actually an ache behind the sternum) but I could hear and feel gas moving around. The gas passed eventually so today before eating anything I took beano. I ate a scrambled egg and heated some applesauce to take the chill off and haven't had any trouble so far. Yesterday I made a smoothie with frozen strawberries and wondered if that was part of the problem. Even in a smoothie the fruit was still raw so maybe that was a source of irritation to the wrap. Any thoughts? Thanks for all your helpful posts, they have been very helpful to me and many others. Barb

Thanks for the Day 10 update! I remember Day 4 or so of recovery well.  It was my toughest one as well!  I guess that's when the swelling starts to kick in.  I'm glad to hear your recovery is going well.  Like you, the recovery was much better than the bad esophagitis episodes I had periodically before I had my surgery!  It's great to hear from you...keep those updates coming!
