Hi Wrapped Members,

Most of the posts that I have been reading say that the appetite is very poor after the Nissen. I must be one of the few patients with a different feeling when it comes to my appetite. I'm constantly hungry and want to eat all the time. I eat every hour to stop the hunger pains. I can also eat a lot of food at a time after only four weeks post op. I've already gained three lbs back that I lost during the first week due to my huge appetite. I'm tired of being so hungry all the time. I never used to eat until 10:00 am or so and now I have to eat the minute I get up in the morning and I'm also eating right before bed at night. I'm seeing my surgeon next week and plan to discuss this with him. Has anyone else had a huge hunger problem after the surgery? I've been on this hunger gig since day-one after the surgery.

Your stomach might be having trouble registering full. This happens sometimes in post-op. Mine did this.
What you have to do is eat food high in fiber to give you the full filling. Also just tell yourself, "No" and drink ice water.

You also could be dumping. 2 years later I still have times when I feel hungry less than an hour after eating. If I ignore it, my blood sugar takes a dive. Lets me know my stomach is indeed empty. I agree that you should eat more fiber if tolerated. Also make sure you have some protein with every meal and snack. protein will keep food in your stomach longer, keeping you satiated longer.

Stomach acid can produce what seems like hunger. Whenever I stop my PPI, I have that symptom of apparent hunger after I eat, it lasts for a few days then I'm back to normal. If I remember what I saw in a journal article, maximum acid production is around 45 minutes after eating.

If you stopped your PPI, or decreased it, after surgery, that could be it. Or maybe your stomach is irritated from the surgery in general, and is hypersensitive to acid production, causing what seems like hunger.

I feel that I still have acid so my guess is that the hunger is caused from the acid. I have a message out to my Surgeon so I'll see what he says.

Are you still on the acid reducers? My doc had me on them for a few weeks post-op. I asked if I could stop taking them after about a month and was happy that I didn't need them then.

I couldn't eat much at a time for months, but my surgery was more extensive than the usual. I was always hungry. I didn't lose any weight because I ate a little every hour or two.

A few years later I still can't eat a large meal, but I haven't tried either. I can tell when my new stomach is full and stop eating. It's great! It was hard to lose weight before surgery, but I am where I want to be now. It's possible to stretch the new stomach by eating too much, but I'm happy I haven't done that.

i am 10 months wrapped. off nexium. i am hungry all of the time. i find that i have to eat every 2 hours. my stomach growls constantly, even while i sleep. keeps my husband awake. i don't have dumping syndrome. i am just always hungry. this drives me crazy as sometimes the hunger hits before i can even do the dishes from the last meal. i am not overweight. i weigh the same as i did when i had the surgery. i hope this is not a lifelong thing as it is not very convenient. i can hardly get thru church without hunger and loud stomach growling. anyone else have this so long after surgery?

Wow..... I thought it was just me who had this problem!!! I'm 3 years with this darnable surgery now and it just doesn't stop!

I just hate this hunger. I can't leave the house without taking snacks with me. Before the surgery I used to sleep in until 8:30 and now I'm awakened every morning at 5:00am with horrible hunger pains. I have to get up just to eat somethng.

me too! me too! me too! can't leave the house without snacks. constantly planning the next meal. it is not just the normal hunger either. it is intense. all consuming when it hits. you just HAVE to get something to eat. like you summerGal, i also used to be able to sleep in. not anymore. this hunger wakes me early and i have to get up and eat something! maybe just a piece of toast, but something. very frustrating. i went out of town with my daughter a few months ago and my biggest worry was the hunger. i packed all kinds of snacks in my suitcase so i would always have something to eat. worried that the stomach growling would keep her awake in the hotel room. i ended up sleeping on my side with 2 pillows up against my abdomen to buffer the noise. i sure hope this is not a lifelong problem.

Has anyone had an endoscopy during a period when they had this hunger feeling? I think it could be gastritis, and normal amount of stomach acid that irritates the lining.

I wonder if the body can be trained, i.e. try putting up with the hunger feeling and only eat on a set schedule. It could be that the body is expecting food all the time so it keeps acid production up.

That's why I said during a period (meaning not necessarily the same exact time) when one is having the symptom.
