Hill Repair VS Fundoplication

It is similar. But the Nissen is taking two sides of your stomach and wrapping your esophagus like a hotdog bun. It's tighter. The Hill is just taking one side and wrapping part of the way around.

You might have a fibroid. I have one, but it's not bothering me, so it's wait and see on it. Don't worry too much about it.

My reflux is still fine, but I'm still coughing some from the pneumonia recovery.
I take Zyertec and Advair for my allergies. The doctor didn't seem concern about mixing them and my pharmacist is good about catching troubles he misses sometimes, so I'm not worried.

My surgeon said he didn't carry much info on the Hill. He drew a picture of what he was going to do and described the procedure "like wrapping your pants leg around your ankle".
It's my understanding that the Hill if done properly it can last longer than a Nissen (20 yrs). I'm hoping mine lasts a lifetime.

I was wondering who was your dr. and how are you feeling to date with your surgery.  I have a large paraesophacal hernia and was told they could not do the hill method.  I so would like to have it.  Could you please let me know who your surgeon was.  Thank you so much.

Hi~ had both so far~ in 3 weeks I will be experiencing my 3rd open Repair....2003~ Nissen Fundoplication~ failed in 6 months w/ an unwrapping by Dr. Vincent DePinto /( I should have filed Malpractice ..seriously!!!!!)  Colo Spgs.....______/

2nd  was 1 year later with an awesome surgeon Dr. Peter Zimmer  ~ a Hill Repair (Dr. Hill invented this in Washington State) few have actually had an open Hill Repair  after an open nissen ( as quickly as I have).

6 years I have been great until recently~ unwrapping again!  Next month I will have another Nissen/ w/ an pinch of hill.....open~ another 10 days i am sure. Dr. Reginald Bell in Denver is only a few surgeons that can do this in the USA!  He can be googled/ found at Swedish Hospital~ I am so incredibly impressed , if anyone needs help or advice/ please let me know....   [email protected]

Hi, I am a very grateful patient of both Dr. Aye's and Dr. Hill.

After years of torment from childhood until age 32; I had been diagnosed with everything from an ulcer, (age 8) to a stress case (most of my life) to a hypochondriac, (yeah I'm a comedian not Woody Allen) to finally GERDS! Hurrah, not.

Even the latest acid blockers, this was 1996, (was it Nexium way back then?) didn't work and my therapist recommended I quit my job due to stress. My symptoms got worse instead of better. Finally, finally a GE recommended testing my esophageal functionality, which turned out be ZERO! Ah, the sweet smell of vindication!

And the new bitter sweet choice of a fairly new surgery or...oh who am I kidding? It was a no brainer.

I was lucky enough to live in Seattle, I was referred to Dr. Aye, he did the Lap-Hill repair at Swedish Hospital and, Dr. Aye if you really are on this forum, patient #13 thanks you for changing her life forever! It was a very new procedure.

1996-2013 the repair is still working, every now and then if I stretch the surgery scars inadvertently, I will have minor reflux. But it is always temporary and easily handled by the ridiculous numbers of over the counter acid blockers.

I also can, and I think this is extremely important, able to vomit. Nobody wants to vomit, nobody likes to vomit, but sometimes, vomit happens. I can't imagine why the less then perfect Nissen Procedure would be considered. What I'd swallowed poison by accident? Ok, weird example, maybe ya drank too much, you get my point!

I'm sorry for those that have had repair failures. Dr. Aye is the best surgeon out there still for the Lap Hill Repair. But I would definitely try to find a surgeon who is well versed in Dr Hill's invention and has a success rate and a good record of follow-ups from other patients that you can read.

I was honored to have Dr. Hill call me personally 1 year to the day of my surgery. He really cared about how his invention had helped me.

Good luck to all of you, in the meantime get off the acid blocker roller coaster ride best way you can......big Pharma has enough of our money.

how much does this procedure cost? and how much did your insurance end up paying?

i heard this surgery costs around 40k - that's a lot of money for me as i'm not from the US and contemplating paying this surgery out of pocket, if you've paid $600 that's great! but is there way anyway for you to find out the actual figure.
