Were you able to get off of PPIs after surgery?

Having NF in 6 days & was wondering if many of you were able to get off of PPIs immediately after surgery? Can't wait to get off of these meds - getting hives & itching when taking them, but in agony if I don't. I have great expectations of the surgery.

I was supposed to keep on the PPIs until my followup visit. I asked if I could stop then and was told it was OK to try. I think I got good advice.

Josie - If you don't tolerate PPIs you could try Zantac instead - but ASK your doctor first!

Write down all the things you want to ask before surgery. Take the list with you. Take with you a second list to ask after surgery - like when to stop acid reducing meds, how long to stay on clear liquids, "full" liquids, soft food.

Don't expect to have an instant improvement. This is major surgery and it takes months to completely recover. In fact for a few weeks your symptoms could worsen. I was lucky and could feel I had no reflux right away.

Hi Alcie - thanks for the reply. Problem is I have been on both 600 mg of Zantac & 120 mg of dexilant daily. I have weaned myself down to 150 mg of Zantac & 60 mg of dexilant daily to a point of pain tolerance. Still getting hives unless I take none of either of these but then the pain becomes too much & I start
Vomiting every time I eat. I will definitely talk to the surgeon.

 

I had surgery February 5th. My dr. said to keep taking the PPI's so my body could heal. Went to see the dr.

on Feb. 22, I have not taken another since and have had no reflux or anything. To say the least I am very

happy. I am also eating anything I want.
