After several tests, all coming back negative, my dr has put me on nexium (going on two weeks) because he seems to think the problem I am have GERD. I never had any heartburn or acid reflux, but now I not only have heartburn, I also have joint pain, sometimes dizziness and restlessness. Has anyone else had this happen to them after taking nexium?

I have taken Nexium and had really bad side effects with it including severe nausea. My doctor switched me to Prevacid and I don't seem to have any problems with it. You may just need to try another PPI, have you told your doctor about your side effects?

Have you had any lifestyle/dietery changes lately? If not, I'd have to say that your nausea may be from the Nexium. I've always gotten weird side-effects from medicines that WEREN'T listed on the label.  I'd suggest trying a different medication; there are several out there that work just as well as Nexium. You may want to try Zegerid. It's a powder-PPI that dissolves in water. You drink it in the morning, waiting 30 mins before eating.

Thanks for the reply and the warm welcome.

 I have tried other heartburn prescriptions and none has helped. Aside from having heartburn while I was on nexium, I don't have heartburn, nor do I feel I have GERD though I understand that there are many symptoms of GERD. My dr is at his wits end and has sent me to a GI dr, which I saw the assistant this morning and told her about the reaction I had with nexium. I refused any more prescriptions of the type. I will have an endoscopy done next month, so I'll plug along (as I have been) until then.

Hi daxota,
I'm very curious as to why you are taking a PPI without heartburn or reflux. Your doctor is right, there are many signs of heartburn but I'm concerned that your doctor just threw you on this medication. What tests have you done already? What problems were you having for your doctor to put you on Nexium? Sorry for all of the questions but I'd like to understand a little better. :)

Well, this is the third time I have tried answering your questions. I don't know what I did, but my answer went somewhere and I didn't click on submit (that I know of). So if there are three others post somewhere along the line...
Anyways, I'll try again.
l have this feeling of a lump in my throat and my esophagus gets to feeling really dry. it feels like I am being lightly choked and at times it feels like my esophagus feels swollen. I know, it's weird. It doesn't matter if I eat, drink or don't have anything. The feeling of something stuck is worse if I eat, like an apple, or take my supplements.
As for the tests, I have had a thyroid uptake, a barium swallow, a scope down my nose into my throat to take a peek and then lastly a CT scan of the soft tissues of the neck. Nothing significant was reported. I am frustrated and hope the endoscopy result will show something as to why I am having this problem.

Yes I have been to see an ENT...but he doesn't know what is wrong either.

Its a strange condition. I wish you all the best during your next appointment with doctor so that dignose is cleared.

Out of curosity may I ask you question? Are you lately feeling depressed or under anxiety or having some sort of panic disorder or  fearful feelings? Has there been any change in your appetite recently?
