Im following a very stricken full liquid diet after a 3 day clear liquid diet and I seem to gaining weight not losing which I was really hoping to do. I had a really huge hyadal hernia which needed to be repaired and has been now. I went in on Monday for surgery was done and recovered in a hospital bed fora couple days. Prior to the surgery I had 4 procedures to burn out some of the bad stuff. it was determined I need the hernia removed or wrapped however you wish to call it before another surgery could be accomplished well enough to get rid of the remainder of bad stuff. ok so all that is done now, I'm home finally able to release some of the air/gas but I actualy put on a pound or so even on these liquid diets has anyone else experienced this and is there something wrong that I need to concern myself with ?

Hi Ben,

Welcome to the Healing Well yeah yeah yeah Wrapped Club! yeah yeah yeah I suspect you were on IV fluids in the hospital, which could explain your weight gain.  I'm sure that as the weeks progress that weight will begin falling off.  Glad you've joined the forum...this is a great place to get support and answers.

I don't know if your surgeon warned you, but your wrap will become increasingly swollen over the next two weeks, peaking on or about the 14 day mark.  Don't be surprised if your swallowing gets worse before it gets better. That's probably why your surgeon has you on a liquid diet.

Thank you and No I was not told the swelling would get worse before better which already seems to reared it's head. I was on ivs as well I had no idea it would possibly add weight Ow what a wealth of useful info in just a few tatements. Thank You turn I will as well start reading your journal. I am assuming the shortness of breath is because the swelling is pushing on my diaphragm or is it something else.

Ben, if you are breathless you need to report that to the doctors, especially if you have any chest pain on exertion. I don't want to cause alarm, but anyone who has just had surgery is at risk of clots etc! So if the breathlessness is a new thing, be sure to report it!

I had many bouts of breathlessness in the hospital. in fact I stayed an extra day because it was so severe. I was given chest rays twice over and then a nebulizer treatment. My heart always test A++ so no one is worried about that. It also seems quite possible the surgery has something to do with it or perhaps the fact that I quit smoking about 6-8 years ago but smoked for a long time when I did. Every time I have had procedures I go thru this breathlessness thing for a week or two and then it's gone I'm oping this is the same.

Hi Ben and welcome to the forum. There is a great wealth of information and support here. I hade my wrap 20 days ago. I was in the hospital for 4 days......with IV's. I initially lost 10lbs the first week but have since gained it back. I'm not sure why because I am on full liquids and some soft food. I am definitely eating less than pre wrap. I had been on steroids for 4 months prior to the surgery and just tapered completely off about a week ago (thanks to my wrap). I think the lack of my weight loss is from steroids. However, it seems that every individual is different when it comes to weight loss/gain. Are you drinking things that are high in salt/sodium, such as broths? Are you drinking sports drinks? They are high in sodium. Watch the content of sodium in your diet. I'm sure that in time, you will gradually lose weight. The wrap doesn't allow us to eat large meals or you will have pain. Just give it time.

I drink a lot of water and apple juice. Solids give me so much trouble I'm fearful to eat anything more than a tiny bit of dry toast with Smart Balance butter on it chewed till its almost liquid.I guess I won't concern myself with the weight loss and just take it if it comes or not. to bad though that I can't seem to lose what I need to loose in these not so happy times of recovery. Doesn't matter I'm just happy and look forward to the day I can eat like a normal person.
