Hi guys,
I know, this question was already asked so many times on this board but I read through the whole forum and just need some updates....
Over a year or maybe more I have my throat (larynx) red ....Some days more some days less
I tried to stay on some diets but it never last long and always caused biggest depressions I ever felt
But now after some barbeque parties with grilled meat , bear, wine etc. I am just tired to avoid this problem and to act like my throat sore and mucus were ok...
Every now and then I have fear of larynx cancer...but I know that I should not...And no one should...because it is quite an unpredictable thing and one just gets crazy thinking about it and fearing it ...
But it is so mentally tough to begin with some diets again ....To stay away from all I love ...not to be able to eat some ice in summer ? well, you all know these feelings quite well I guess...I am crying now as I am writing this letter...I am only 22 (getting 23 in July), how have I deserved thing like this to happen to me ? (
Please someone dealing with the same thing, write me about your successes and failures, how long should it take to improve and if it CAN IMPROVE? Can a throat heal?
It would be easier for me to start on diet and to stay on it if I only knew it would get me somewhere .
I am looking forward to your replies...

Awnn I cried reading this letter, I am sorry, I know how you feel, I was diagnosed last month but had LPR for 3 months so far my symptoms are lump in throat, mucus now and then, dry mouth (from pepsin), and diminished smells, like my nose will be clogged one minute not so much the next, but I am 21 and going to be 22 soon, so I know the feeling of us being young and thinking gosh how this disease it's gonna kill me before my 30, I am still lost myself, I was crying earlier today, because I was thinking the same thing as you did. I had to quit my job yesterday which I just started because of the stress of this job, and I did do what you did try and ignore the disease like it's not there when it is. I hope i can say it does get better, but so far I been having hard time, failed one my classes because I was constantly depressed this semester at college, but let me say there are a lot of good people on here and you will find some good assurance as well as answers, I just wanted to say I am on the same boat being so young so if you need anyone to talk to I am here.

Wow, you seem to be even more distressed than me...thats no good...I guess we both must calm down a bit, it is darn difficult but though...What measures do you take against the decease?
What symptoms do you have and what have your doc told you? Is your throat damaged as well and if yes how serious this damage is?

You know, on the other hand...we are young and so are our bodies, so maybe it can be healed yet

Cancer is a fear I think we all have, some days I think to myself "when is this going to kill me"? Having said that, we can't throw away years of our lives waiting for death. We have to do our best "play the hand we were dealt", as we have no choice. I realize it is very hard at times to "push through", however the important thing is to never give up hope. There's a post from justpassingthrough that details things ppl try to over come lpr, Ill bump it to the top for you so you can look it over. Hope it helps

DOGBONES, thank you very much I read it and found a lot of helpful info ...anyway ...do you think is it really so that we should end up with cancer one day?
I try to be optimistic and think that we all exxagerate a little ....
I asked my doc (I live in Germany) and he told that normally this doesnt happen but no one can predict...You can consider yourself quite healthy and then one day it happens to you....Or smokers...I guess they are much more at risk then we are....
What do you think?
I had a "mild irritation of larynx area" all the months without diet dont know how is it now....
What about you? Are you on diet? Do you feel like you are improving ?
It is really iportant to me to "gather" your experiences

I don't know if you or I will get cancer from this, I hope and pray we all grow old and die many years from now. Just as there are non-smokers who die from lung cancer all the time, we just don't know who's going to roll snake-eyes in life. What I do know is that I'm ill, so now I must do everything I can to nurish my body to fight against the illness. This can be done with diet, supplements, meds, or surgery.

I have been struggling with gerd (17+yrs) and lpr (2 yrs). Some days my symptoms are mild, others it's really bad. I did the koufman diet for several months and now I'm trying the fast track.

Doggbones, that is so frustrating, you know I can eat evrth and may need to clear my throat in the morning which means my throat is still inflammed but now I am on a diet and PPIs and feel so tight in my throat and such a big lump there....I wonder why is it so? can it get worse on diet and PPIs?
It gets mentally much worse cause when i eat evrth (never eat some bad unhealthy foods) I feel ok and distract myself but i know it does not help to reduce my inflammation...but helps to reduce my sorrrow and pain....
Lung cancer sounds scary but i am more afraid of the throat one....
Oh darned does it mean my best years are already past ?

Yeah, I was going through something with my doctor, he wants me to get the 24hr probe done, I do not have the money for the test at the moment, and I also do not want to get it done because I know I have LPR it's pretty much accurate, I just want him to prescribe me what I need him to, so I can be on my way, I know that the test is helpful, but I do not want to put anymore tubes down my nose or throat I had 3 endoscopies done in 5 month period and i feel like symptoms have gotten worse since I did those test my body needs rest you know? I have the same symptoms I mentioned above, I just need to get something for my mouth my newest symptom, (dry, irritated mouth, how fun? LOL), he wants me to come in for visit and I am just in like frustration with him because I doubt he can really help me, what I need is an expert on this illness, not him. He goes LPR DOES not cause dry mouth yes it does, everyone body reacts different to illnesses some people have acid taste (which I had, now I have dry mouth which indicates I am refluxing pepsin more than acid these days due to white coated tounge every morning.) I just want to hurry and finish college so I can have better insurance and opt for better doctors, right now I stuck with what I got. //SIGHS what can I do? :)

well it seems bit different here in Germany...we are free to choose everyone we want but the problem is not everybody is aware of that kind of reflux (silent reflux) and cannot give appropriate recommendations.
I had an appointment for 24 ph probe in february and I was really willing to do it but I failed...I could not tolerate the tube going down in my body and after the third attempt my doc and I both gave up...There are not few people who cant do it...You know, what I think....I may be wrong...but I guess not only our body but our overloaded brains need some "vacation" from all that too...You know my husband does not let me reading all these forums, he means I get only more frustrated reading other stories and "trying on" other experience...He may be right....I am very sick and depressed mentally...
Concerning the docs, I do not believe that even if you find the best doc he will help you to cure...No one does but you...You and me...we need to find some strengh in us to tell us that is not the end of normal life it is just some stone on our road which may be a bit heavy but we MUST push it aside...
I read so much helpful info on this forum that I never heard from any doctors...So do not wait that smb will rescue you....Cant your doctor just give you a prescription for the pills? It gets quite easily here ...dont know how is it in USA
Anyway I wish you all the luck !!!! Keep posting how are you feeling and whether you have some improvements or setbacks....

Inpinkagony, are you female or male by the way ?

White coated tongue doesnt always mean pepsin refluxing....It can also occur when you do not eat enough or on some diet....SO I was told once by some doc and it seems to be true...Now i am on double dose PPI (80 mg pro day) and kind of diet (only first day yesterday) and I noticed today that my tongue was very white coated , when I eat evrth I want I usually have a normal tongue...
Not sure what the whole is...Sometimes I have a feeling that pills and diets make the things for me worse...But I need to be patient and stay through to see what happens next ....
I am going to be on a strict diet for these 2 weeks (even if my husband has his b-day , have no idea what I could eat) to see if I improve...And then I am flying on vacation and have absolutely no clue what I could eat there to keep my diet- nothing xD But the good think I can do to me - to avoid alcohol...alcohol has turned to my worst enemy....Oh boy....(((( It makes me feel associolized
What about your social life?
I used to be such an active person....restaurants, bars, friends, discos...I have no intention to lock myself down in my apartment now and to cut out all my interests just have no clue what to order in restaurants and how to manage to stay happy dining out with friends ?

Is it some hope? Can it be managable ?

Is there a chance I get rid of this inflammation and be able to eat normal food again?

I do not speak of excessive drinking which I used to have before I just want to feel normally again ...now I feel like smth moves in my throat....can it be an ulcer or just mucus? Will it get better if I do not drink any beer any more?

I cant bear at any more

Some ppl feel improvement on ppi's and others feel worse, you'll have to judge as time goes on. There are those of us that can manage symptoms through diet, supplements or meds but there are those who feel surgery is the best chance they have to be normal. Surgery has a large % of success, however not all ppl get "cured" with surgery. IMO, surgery is not a "cure" but rather a better way to control symptoms for some.

Which ever path you take, it will take paitents to see results. The truth is that if you truely have an underlined issue causing gerd or lpr, you like the rest of us may be in for a long road as there rarely is a quick fix. cry   Hang in there!

Dear DOGBONES,

if only I knew what it could be...I have done all possible tests already except but 24 ph probe...(I could not tolerate the tube so it failed) ...Everything is absolutely o.k.
Endoskopy, barium swallow showed no abnormalities at all...I think I had every now and then but though very rarely some sympthoms of reflux like maybe I could suddenly start to cough then I drank some water and it passed away- and that happened maybe like once in a half year...But its my fault that it has happened to me now cause I used to lay down immediately after dinner or could eat at night and go to sleep- but I surely was not the only one who did so...Or the worst - I ate quite a lot and then went straight to the gym...And drank quite a lot of alcohol...well not so much judging by others, but though quite often a glass or two of beer after lunch or so...I remember myself to clear the throat after eating a big lunch too....but it has never been so drastically
But I never felt anything like that before in my throat...And I guess now I get that stupid sympthoms cause my throat is irritated....So maybe if I manage to get rid of this irritation and to maintain this for quite a while it will come back to normall again ?
And concerning this point I have also one question...Why does not any ENT heal our throat with corticosteroids? They are known as great anti-inflammatory things...I am aware that maybe your throat will be inflammed again by the next refluxng but I just want to help this darned irritation to go away quicklier...Maybe it would make this healing process run faster???
What do you think?
about operations...I live in Germany which is known to have great medicine but not every doc knows about LPR thats why I do not trust the medicine here ....

Hi Shelion,

There is hope! My LPR is 95% better. I was on a PPI for 9 weeks starting in January. This healed my throat irritation and reduced the globus/ lump in throat feeling. At this time I also cut out all gluten containing foods and eventually dairy products too (I was keeping a food journal and realized cheese made me cough). When i discontinued the PPI , I switched to a H2 blocker for two weeks to minimize the acid rebound.... I still had rebound but I managed to get through it.

In addition to no gluten or dairy, I'm following the Fast Tract diet and it really helps keep my symptoms under control. If you search this forum there is a Fast Tract thread. I can finally have a glass of wine now and then, makes me feel like a normal person.

Give the PPI some time to work, and think about keeping a food journal. The food journal really helped me to identify what aggravated my LPR.

Thank you soo much for your encouraging words, I am so depressed now....I guess some bad examples I read here contributed alot to my state now....
That is why I am seeking for stories like this now
Has your irritation in larynx completely gone? Was it irritation just in throat or in larinx?
I will take a look on a fast tract diet, thanks !
Are you planning to slowly get back to normal food or how long are you gonna stay on this diet?
And how could you find out wether you had acid rebound or not?

My original symptoms included coughing, episodes of severe choking (which I believe were laryngeal spasms), sore throat, weak voice, difficulty swallowing and globus. I never had heartburn until I stopped the PPI and H2 blockers and acid rebound kicked in. Almost all of these symptoms are gone now .... My voice will break occasionally and if I eat something I shouldn't I will get this annoying cough. Gaviscon helps control the cough.

I'm sure I'm gluten sensitive , so I will likely be gluten free for the rest of my life. I will eventually start to add more foods back into my diet, always keeping a food journal to track any symptoms. Meals take more planning and more cooking now, but it's worth it!!

I'm sure you will get better! It will take some time, and trial and error. As to what you can and can't eat...Read the posts about the Fast Tract diet to get an idea of what it's all about.

What pasty do you mean? Mettwust oder Leberwurst? Ich denke die sind beide etwas zu fettig leider :(
Magere Wurst ist wahrscheinlich besser, Pute, Hühnchen, Kochschinken, Corned Beef und so. Du hast geschrieben, dass du deine Ernährung umgestellt hast, inwiefern? Hat dir dein Arzt eine Beratung gegeben?
The good thing is that you have a diagnosis, when I asked the ENT about LPR he just stared at me blankly. I live in a country with an awful health system, you are lucky you live in Germany :)
It's not easy to live with this, but you will get used to it and it will get easier over time once you have figured out what you can eat. I find dietary changes are more effective than medication when it comes to throat issues.

You guys will find something that helps relieve your symptoms. Ive dealt with if for two years, and after a while you just get used to it. Look on this board, there is a lot of good info. I like cough drops (there is evidence that some LPR patients may suffer from too little saliva production), pepto bismol, and sleeping with a humidifier.

As far as cancer, docs arent sure on that yet. Even if it does, it is most likely only a very small percentage of people with LPR. Try not to worry about it bc it might not even elevate your risk.

Ich versuche grade die Dr. koufman harte 2 wöchige Diät durchzuziehen indem ich fast nur gemüse, Hafebrei, bananen und Melone esse , und bisschen gebackenes Hähnchen...und das ist verdammt schwer...Ich glaube so kann ich nicht lange aushalten, noch dazu kommt es dass ich keine Besserung merke...ich nehme auch PPI ...Pantoprazole aber scheint mir nicht bes zu helfen...Ich würde sogar sagen mir gehts schlechter mit Diät und Pillen....ist es möglich?
Wo wohnst du und welche symptome und verbesserungen hast du schon? Was isst du? ich kann auf Gebackwaren,Käse Pasta und so auf lange Sicht nicht verzichten...ich bin bereit gegrilltes, gebratenes, alkohol und schoki aufzugeben , jedoch auch mit großer Mühe. Aber mal Hähnchen mit Sahne-Mozarella Sauße überbacken oder mal ein Quiche backen - das kann nicht einfach so weg aus meinem Leben !

Chuk T....I am just wondering how on earth it can be possible that on the third day of diet and pills (well I ve been taking pills 3 weeks already) I am not just not improving, but feeling maybe even worth...Or do I need some patience? I tried to stay on diet in Winter for 2 months and it has brought me nowhere either...My throat was mldly irritated...When i drink alcohol it is more irritated that is why I guess I need give up but it is not soo easy when you are 22 (23)
Maybe you are right about cancer....but the reason is that it doesnt always depend on LPR ...Just imagine your larynx being constantly irritated for years....Do you think it won't cause any damage? And I do not seem to get rid of that irritation...I ve been to numerous docs and evrth they could tell me was just like I should keep taking pills....They did not mention any diet...But if I dont improve on diet and pills I wont surely not improve just on pills
I am just wondering if this battle is worth trying cause I am ready to give up and live with that irritation and eat evrth I want (but not excessively) because It will sooner or later drive me crazy!
What about you? What can you eat?
As I wrote above to IDAD I just cant refuse on croussaines , some slices of pie , cheese and so on...I will try not to consume any drop of alcohol and no chocolate but I want to have my quiche pie and some bred with cheese and sausage !!!!

Well, im not sure what to tell you on the diet side. Nothing really works that great for me, so i just eat whatever I want. For me its more about having agents that relieve LPR near by. I always carry pepto or cough drops with me.

Proton pump inhibitors and and diets dont work for me. I know that much. If i ate a giant steak dinner and had a few beers, then yes it does affect me. But eating a salad vs eating a normal lunch doesnt make much difference in my case.

Try sleeping with a humidifier. For some reason that helps me a pretty good bit. Also, I think in europe many cough drops contian hexylresorcinol, which is known to kill pepsin (what they think causes the damage in your throat). Wish we had that stuff here!

Can you provide me some names so I could check it on Internet?
Actually I prefer to avoid these tablets cause they contain vitamin C and its acidic...or peppermint

The problem is...before I never felt some pain or discomfort in chest or a bit lower...Now I do have it from time to time...which means things get worse...Well I am not sure... I know that I have had LPR for some period already not knowing anything about it and not experiencing some troubles with it at all...And in such cases I prefer not to know about desease and live happily rather than not being able to help myself now...How long are u having it already?
I am going to stay on this intrdoduction diet of Dr. Koufman for 2 weeks and then I am flying away to Sardinia and hopefully I will be enjoying normal meals there...maybe stay away from tomatos etc. but eating NORMALLY and not evrth tasteless like I am doing now
