Nissen fundoplication and pregnancy

Hi KitKat,

If I were you, I'd consult with a GI doc, and hopefully get referred to a really great Nissen surgeon.  Meet with them both and discuss your concerns and see what they say.  I can't believe that a Nissen would preclude pregnancy...in fact, if you're prone to reflux, being pregnant without a Nissen could be horrible.  I had heartburn for the first time when pregnant.  If I'd had GERD back then, I don't know how I'd be able to take it.  Also, it would help you avoid taking PPIs during pregnancy, which must be a good thing.

I just had the fundo this past Aug. 27th and I asked the surgeon after the operation about childbirth and delivery. I plan to have kids within a few years. He said I would actually be at an advantage because most people get heartburn anyways during pregnancy and it would have made the condition worse, had I not had the surgery. I also asked him if there was anyway I could do damage to the wrap during delivery and he said no. I hope this helps. 

 

So, there are others who have asked the same question.  You could probably Google the topic and find lots of information out there. Just consult with your doc or surgeon and have a chat about it.  I'm sure you'll get the information you need.

According to my dr about 1/2 get reglux returning after pregnancy and 1/2 of those require redo surgery. I've had a fundo and want children, my surgeon said I wouldnt cope with pregnancy without it but i would happily have redo if it meant I could have children.

I've already vomited once since my fundo so that shouldn't be a problem!!! I also suffer from an estrogen intolerance so the slightest bit of odd hormones is gonna make me vom!
