I have to have a gastroscopy in 4 weeks time. Does anyone know what this entails. I have suffered with GERD for a few years. 2 Years ago I had an endoscopy and was prescribed 30mgs of zoton (prevacid). Recently it stopped working, I got the sore throat back and the cough, due to GERD aspiration, although I don`t get heartburn. Which I think is strange. Reluctantly the GP gave me an extra 15 mgs of prevacid, which hasn`t stopped the symptoms. Now I have an appointment for the hospital. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Vanessa.

Just had a grastroscopy on Monday and I was a little scared at first, but the test went well and I was unaware of anything that happened during the test and woke back up afterwards feeling pretty good.  They gave me a gel to swollow before I went in to help with gagging and to numb the throat.  Then they gave me some drugs in my IV and I was put in a twilight sleep during the proceedure.  I was unaware of anything that was going on and in my opinion it was a good experience.  Don't be afraid.  Now I go back to the surgeon next week to find out biopsy reports and for a check up.  My medicine (40 mg. of prilosec) has quit working for me and I am misserable.  ugh!!!  Have had Gerd for years and now I am back to having all kinds of problems and it flarring up my asthma as well.  I see my family doctor on Friday so I hope he is willing to change my medication and am hoping for some relief.   The only abnormality they found in me was that your esphogus is suppose to come into your stomach at an angle and mine goes straight in.  Good luck on your test!!!

Hi Deborah. Thank you so much for the reply. I guess you are in America. I am from England. My procedure sounds quite similar to yours, from what the letter tells me. I think we are behind the times here though. We don`t get gel to swallow. Also if we have our hiatul hernia repaired it is a major op. Keyhole surgery isn`t an option. I read on a post that someone was being treated for asthma and it was the GERD causing aspiration, they didn`t have asthma. I have a cough all the time cos of the acid going into my lungs. Thats why I am having the gastroscopy. Do you think your problems might stem from your Oesophagus being straight instead of at an angle? Good luck with the biopsy results. Vanessa

Hi again........I just started having asthma problems too. Now I also am wondering if it is from the Gerd problems. Been real bad since all this started. I hope to get some answers and soon cause I am misserable. Good luck once again with your proceedure. I see the surgeon who did mine on Tuesday of next week and see my family doctor tomorrow. All he has been doing is listening to me complain and trying this and trying that with my prilosec.... but so far no progress. Maybe I have been on it too long and need to try something new. Gerd is a horrible thing to live with!

I have just come back from having a gastroscopy .......with sedation. I was so scared that I couldn't sleep for a couple of nights beforehand. My friend had been a nurse and told me several years ago that it was a dreadful procedure and it played on my mind  I had a nightmare about it afterwards. 

I've got a 'thing' about my throat being touched and can't wear anything round my neck unless it's loose. I've had two babies by ceaserean section, one an emergency so I'm not a wimp or a coward, it's just a psychological thing and I know I'm not unusual in this. Who wants a tube stuck down their throat???

Anway, apart from being a complete wreck while waiting for the procedure I can say with hand on heart that it was easy peasy and I would even have another one if I had to without a qualm.

The nurses and doctor were kind and understanding. I told her I wanted as much sedation as she could give me. The spray in the throat was a very strange sensation and that made me panic and the next thing I remember is waking up just minutes after the procedure. I wasn't even aware of them putting the mouthguard in.

So, I'd like to put anyones' mind to rest who's waiting to have one and is as worried as I was  it REALLY is NOTHING to worry about.  The worst thing about is in our imagination.

And once they know your esop. is OK . You may get to try the CamPill, I had that one last time Just looks one of the vitimins I take. You just swallow it while laying down with a straw. Then you watch it go down on a screan about 1min. The pill comes out later in your stools, no need to save. june

Vanessa, what region are you from? I am currently being tested in order to have a keyhole hernia repaired. I am in North East LIncs, and our hospital is very very poor compared to many in the UK, so I am very surprised you have no keyhole option. Have you a larger hernia than usual?

Hi Deborah...I would pretty much guarantee that your asthma problems are being made worse from your GERD. I had years of uncontrolled asthma caused by GERD, and finally had the surgery about a year and a half ago.
