Manometry Test?

 Hi everyone,just wanted to ask if you think Manometry is compulsory before getting nissen fundo done.My surgeon says its not and a barium swallow gives a good idea of motility. Everything ive read online states it should be? Thanks. Barry

Is your surgeon really experienced? Mine is and insisted on the test. It's not usually an awful test and gives the surgeon valuable information.

I have a weak swallow, as tested. If I had had a full Nissen I wouldn't have been able to swallow past the wrap.

hi Alcie,im wondering that myself,ive had a nissen but im refluxing again but i had swallowing problems for a number of months aswell.He,s now about to do a manometry,a bit late if you ask me! He said he has done a hundred nissens. Thanks. Barry

Baza-

With all 3 of my nissens I had to have a manometry done before the surgeons would do the nissen. These were 3 different surgeons. I eve had a very good functioning nissen that was torn apart by the esophagus stent they had to use to help my esophageal tear to heal and they still wanted a manometry done first. Then I had one done about 8 months after the last redo to see if there were any new swallowing issues.
Of course with the tear I have developed a slight motility issue, but it doesn't stop me from having a full wrap.
I believe it is a very important test to have done before a nissen to find issues like Alcie's. I believe Joy also had a motility issue and has a 270 degree wrap.

My first surgeon insisted upon it. I questioned it....I saw no need in having it done. Well, thankfully I did....turns out that I have very low motility and have tohave the toupet fundiplication instead of the nissen. Had I not, I would have been back in surgery very quickly because of swallowing issues. After finding the results, I was humbled and decided that perhaps I should trust him when itcomes to tests I need. By the way....Worst! Test! Ever! I was very traumatized by it.

Yeah, I hate the test and got another one to look forward to at the end of the month. Last one I had the doctor doing it nearly took my nose off, or it felt like that anyway. He gave no numbing spray and just said that would make the test harder to do. Remember he had to give up on one nostril and used the other one after the only time he got the pipe up and down it ended up coming out of my mouth and gagging me like crazy. God I hated that Doctor. Got to trek across London to the Royal London at Whitechapel this time so hopefully they know what they're doing.

Hi,i know ,this test is the worst of all,what gets to me is all the waiting ive to do,hospital told me i could wait 6 months to a year! on this.Im totally at the end of my tether with this,to have Nissen Fundo which doesnt work and then have to wait all this time to try and find whats wrong,ive already waited 5 months on a barium and its results. Unbelievable!

The manometry test gives the surgeon the best idea of esophogeal motility it's like 5 mins of not very nice feeling but will provide the doc with the best evidence for whether or not an op would be suitable to be honest it's not that bad it's not nice but it didn't even make me gag it just feels very uncomfortable when it's there and hurts a little as they push it through and the 24 hour test is fine I was so nervous but it's really not that bad you'll be fine

Hi sammywalker21,ive done the test about four years ago with a gastro doc and he told me i had a loose les just.My surgeon did not carry out a test of his own though,i had nissen done in Feb last year.I found the test uncomfortable but bearable,its being off the ppis that worries me lol. barry

I'm 3 days post my surgery and can say I feel a lot worse now than when I had that manometry test done lol

Hi Barry,

I had a manometry (and a barium swallow) before my surgery.  When my asthma doc sent me to a top Nissen surgeon in my new city (post-Nissen), that surgeon also did a manometry.  I think it's the "gold standard" for determining swallowing info.

Hi Baza,

I have been through two Manometries, Barium Swallows and Upper Endoscopies.

Now I am a candidate for surgical intervention for a 360 Nissen or the LINX.

If you had not had an Esophageal Manometry before, be sure to *tell* the MD or NP who will be doing it about any nasal or throat issues that you might have. In my case, the Nasal Septum was deviated, making the passage wider on one side and smaller on the other. No one asked me first (sadly) but I educated them and it felt way better by going though the wider side.

I'm scheduled for my wrap next Friday and had the manometry completed. It was recommended by my surgeon and my GI doc. It was one of many tests I had. Any testing that can aid in finding out what exactly is going on will aid in offering the best medical options. It was very unpleasant for me, but considering my misery now, I'd do it again.

@breezyj3 The fact that you have weak motility and you had a Toupet performed how are your symptoms with regards to Reflux?
