Hi mmm I didnt actually fast but it was no food for I think 4 hours so it depends on time of test. My first was a local hospital only 20mins away,as I was very self consious walking with the tube taped to my nose. Then it was back after 24hours. The last one was with a different Consultant and I had to go to Birmingham more of a trip and that one was a 2pm visit so I just ate rice krispies. She had difficulty getting the tube passed the wrap but again I felt really well for over a week after. Weird or what? Think I need a tube down for ever(only joking) I think you could try some mindfullness therapy just until tube down then you will be very pleased with yourself and can get the help you need.

I don't want to walk around with it either, I'm very self conscious! I'm not sure what sort of mindfulness would work - memories of having the scope forced down whilst semiconscious and unable to move take over my mind!!

On the Day Before Your Procedure

To ensure the most accurate results possible, it is important that you do not eat or drink anything after midnight on the day before your procedure, unless you are scheduled for an afternoon procedure. The exception is medication taken with small sips of water.

If you scheduled for an afternoon procedure, you may continuing drinking clear liquids up to 6 hours prior to your arrival time.

CLEAR LIQUIDS: water, apple juice, ginger ale, sprite, beef or chicken broth WITHOUT noodles, coffee or tea WITHOUT cream or milk, most sodas, sherbet, pop-sicles, and Jell-O that is not red or orange. DO NOT DRINK ANYTHING RED OR ORANGE

I had the exact same thing happen to me. I also have a deviated septum and had to abort my first attempt at a manometry. My second attempt was successful, however, the test was one of the most miserable experiences of my life. In my personal opinion, the test was worthless. The test concluded that I have a weak LES. I already knew that-- that's why I have reflux! Look for another option. The manometry isn't absolutely necessary.

Unfortunately your cannot be considered for surgery without it and there are no alternatives available where I live. If it has to be started fasting I'll probably be too ill to proceed, especially off medication, but I have to try because the hospital has nothing else to offer me and I can no longer cope with my symptoms.

I have found that the person doing the manometry has a lot to do with how successful it goes. Some spray the back of the throat to numb the gag reflex and some use a gel you sniff up the nostril. Personally the gel worked best for me. It numbs your nostril and gag reflex.

Even though this is an old post I do want to comment about an earlier post here. The manometry and barium swallow are VERY important tests to have before any reflux surgery. They can tell and show what is going on in there and let them know what type is best for the best outcome.

I had my Manometry over 10 years ago before having the Bard Endocinch. This month my surgeon said that he only needed to do a Barium swallow and a scope to determine whether or not I needed the Nissen. One can be considered for surgery without a manometry. Remember- not too long ago, the manometry test didn't even exist and the Barium swallow was the tried and true method. Nearly 20 years ago my esophagus was tested and examined with Barium-- why? because the clinic didn't have a manometry device.

opnwhl4: All I know is that my doctor asked for a Barium swallow and endoscopy. This was enough for a toupet fundo.

I will be looking into the numbing process. It's just hard to get make fair comparisons. The people who have no complaints usually don't post about it.

I must say that you have the scariest signature ever. And actually, because I'm charging myself to get that manometry done, a good push for me in the right direction. For those who do not know what I'm talking about:

Thanks for your comments Bill. I've now been told you don't have to be completely fasted, though obviously not eaten within a few hours. Also been told I don't have to do a whole 24 hours - can have it put in midday and turn up from 7.30 am the next day to have it taken out. The technicians placing the wires do just that all day long, every day, so I felt a bit reassured. And usually it isn't displaced by vomiting they said.

I guess if manometry is available then it is preferred, though I dread being asked to do barium as well - that's going to end up on someone's shoes for sure!!

Hi everyone, just reviving this thread because I read a couple of posts about LES being the cause of reflux. But, unless you do the manometry and find that out, it's not necessarily true, right? I mean, my stomach had been awful for months before i felt my LPR symptoms, so I'm guessing it's my stomach that's bloating/gassing/low-acid-ing and 'pushing' food up...If my LES is weak, that would be coincidence, no?
I would guess if you have no stomach symptoms, the chances are good that your LES is weak, but otherwise--it could just be your unhappy stomach causing reflux.
Or am I wrong...?

I had a result where the swallowing works fine and resting pressure is good, the but manometry revealed I was born with an abnormal (ie short) esophagus. Anyone else had this? The Surgeon explained he thinks it's causing my reflux, because right after I eat, the pressure of that valve being higher up on me forces it open with food in it. I think I understood that right...

Captain Haven,

Have you always had reflux problems? I ask simply to see if the short oesophagus is actually the root of your problem?

Did the consultant offer you any other options?

Pink - They think I have. Hearing symptoms, I can tell I've had this it seems like as long as I can remember but undiagnosed. Long story short, due to parents religious beliefs, I didn't go to doctors growing up. My faith is different since I became a Christian at end of high school and starting going to doctors. Both on the endoscopy and manometry (as well as pH test) the diagnosis was GERD.

Hi! My esophageal manometry was scheduled for this morning.Although I tried many strategies to calm myself, I was still very nervous. When the nurse checked my blood pressure, it was 165/102 (and I don't have high blood pressure).

I've had 3 sinus surgeries. I really tried to cooperate so this test would be successful. But when the tube started going down my throat and I started gagging, I couldn't handle it. The nurse was very nice and told me that I wasn't the only one that hasn't been able to complete the test. I feel bad that I couldn't, but reading the posts on here has helped me know I'm not alone. I am concerned that my doctor and surgeon may be upset with me. I am also worried that insurance may not pay for my July 2 surgery. I hope they will pay because I have a hernia, severe reflux (wakes me up from a dead sleep to throw up) that doesn't respond to meds, and I'm fairly young (44).

I don't know if a sedative like Zanex would have helped me or not. In a way, I feel silly, but I know this is just something I can't help.

I was initially unable to complete the manometry that was an important part of my pre-Fundo work-up. I had a large paraesophageal hernia that diverted the direction of my esophagus and when the tube hit a certain point, it simply coiled up and could not go any further. They tried several times It was a difficult experience and I n the end, they said they could not do the test. However, I was also scheduled for an EGD two days later. And they altered the procedure for me. I was put out for the EGD and after the surgeon completed his test, he used his lap tools to insert the tube and then they woke me up so I could do the manometry. Ten swallows of water. Ten swallows of applesauce. No problems. They got good readings that turned out to be very important to the surgeon. The test showed I have a weak swallow and I ended up having a Toupet instead of a Nissen.
Perhaps your surgeon can do the same for you. Many people have difficulty with this procedure; I know I was not the first one at this hospital to have it done in this alternate way. Your surgeon will know what to do. You have my best wishes. I know how tough this part is.

Thank you for your encouraging words. It helps to know I'm not the only one to be unable to do this procedure. My surgeon's receptionist called me this morning (I have an appt. on Mon.) and she was letting me know the results from the test probably wouldn't be in by then. So, I was able to explain what happened during the test. She assured me that other patients have had this happen and that she would talk to the doctor to see if he wants to set up an alternative test for me. I hope he will put the tube in while I am sedated (like you described) and then allow me to complete the test after waking me up. I know this test is important and I think I could do that.
