Pepcid AC vs PPI vs Zantac

I found out that Pepcid AC works for me tamping down the heart burn symptoms. PPIs (priolosec / protonix) does not. Tried Zantac as well and it does not work. I am trying to understand why.

Does anyone else have similar experience ?

hi,ive recently found that out aswell,i was on nexium for years and tried various other ppis but I tried ranitidine (zantac) and feel it works much better than a ppi.The only problem is I feel a lot of fatigue on it.Ive asked my Gp for Pepcid to see if it makes a difference but he wont prescribe it,he said they are all the same.He also cant believe a h2 works better than a ppi?
I cant explain why it works better,all I know is I don't have as many bad side effects ie.Joint pains,depression,hot flushing etc.
Doctors hand ppis out like sweeties I think! Barry

Hi. I tried Prilosec with Zantac at the same time (physician ordered) and didn't get much relief from it but I do get relief from Zantac. I take 150 mgs twice a day, morning and night. I'm not doing this on my own but am being followed with an ENT who decided to have me stop the PPI and start all over as he put it. Just the Zantac first and so far it's been a year and it works for me.

I guess we're all very different, and although PPIs are thought to be superior in terms of symptom control, everyone will process and react to them differently.

When I first started on PPIs (over 10 years ago!), they were really effective, but over time became less so, so by the time I came to having my surgery last month, was on 30mg Lansoprazole in the morning, and 150mg Ranitidine at night (and still waking up to take antacids in the night!). I think the time comes for some that medication isn't going to work, and its needs a 'mechanical' solution!
