Weight: I'm 5ft 5.5" and a couple of weeks before the surgery I had a bad bout of something and went from 168lb to 158lb, which mostly piled on again so before surgery I was 162lb.
Hi Everybody,
For any one who just wants to read my story you can find it atthe bottom of this post otherwise, here is my recovery journal
I just want to share my recovery and hopefully get some feedback, so I can help some people and they can help me !******************************************************************************************The Day of the Op: 162lbI was brought up to theathre, waiting around for awhile and was finally brought into the operating room. The nursing staff and doctors were all brilliant, and made me feel so comfortable in their care.
Once the surgery was over, I woke up in the theatre waiting room and immediately asked for some pain medication. If I am being realistic I was probably a little bit out of it at this point. The most pain I had was from my shoulders, whereas my incisions felt fine. I spent the next few hours up in my room going in and out of sleep, with doctors and nurses regularly checking my incisions.
When I eventually woke up for real I pulled the pulse monitor thing off my finger, causing a lot of beeping, some panic on my part etc. I called the nurse, using my magic button :) and had her turn of the pulse thing off so I could get up and move about
because I was
full of energy !!I wasn't permitted to drink untill my surgical doctor came to visit and by the end of the day I drank about
3 small 50ml glasses of water. My parents visited later in the evening, we watched some classic Mrs. Browns Boys and by the end of that I was exhausted so they left and I slept from about
10.30 - 12.00. After that I dont think I slept for more than and hour to two at a time and was up by 6.00a.m. Now, here's some
fair warning (!) ask and recieve pain meds as often as possible!!
Aug 9th: 1 day post op Having woken at 6.00 a.m. and recieved my last meds at 4.00 a.m. I was in surprisingly good condition, in fact I was incredibly active but by 10 a.m. I had overworked myself, I was exhauseted and very uncomfortable (Hence, the previous warning). I had a visit from my nan around that point but I was pretty much exhausted and wanted noting more than to sleep, which I did for about
4 hours (Yay, I was in and out of sleep but YAY nonetheless).
I knew I was going to be released that day (otherwise I'd have had to wait all weekend) so I was excited and kind of dreading it. I had to be seen by my surgical team, the nursing staff and my dietician before I was permitted to leave. By, 4.00 pm I was out of hospital, had picked up my perscript
ion (Solpodol) and was on my way home, (a very uncomfortable hours drive).
I spent two hours chilling at home, moving slowly and relaxing.
Food and Drinks: I was given permission for tea
YAY , which I managed to drink a small amount of, and I managed to eat about
an egg cups worth of Ambrosia creamed rice. Also, I was drank some cranberry juice and a fair amount of water :)
Aug 10th: 2 days post op Last night I slept fabulously! I took some solpadol at around 20 to 8, went to bed not long after, slept a good four hours, was awake for about
two, more solpadol and slept from 2 untill 7.00 a.m !! I feel amazing, not to say that pain is perfect but honestly I feel pretty great, despite some weakness.
Food: Some tea, cranberrys juice, water and 1/4 cup of Ambrosia creamed rice.
Sleep: took me awhile to get to sleep, but once I took my meds, I conked out and slept a good 9 hours
Aug 11th: 3 days post op: 158lbWoke up feeling great. Went into town twice, spent awhile shopping, was really in good spirits :)
Food: tea, cranberry, water and a rich tea biscuit (dunked)
Weight: I've lost about
4 lb
since the operation :)
Sleep: I slept like a baby last night, from around 12.30 to 11a.m. and with no medication.
Aug 12th: 4 days post op: 156lb Weight: As of this morning I have loast 6lbs
!! I am really liking the weight loss aspect of this
Food: tea, cranberry, water, 2 rich tea biscuit and half a cup of homemade veg soup (yum)
Sleep: I only slept about
6 hours last night, not to bad but it just meant I was up early
Pain: The pain has been pretty good lately, have taken very few tablets as its so tolerable
Aug 13th: 5 days post op: 155lb I've been pretty cranky all day, and very bored as activities are restricted and I cant work! But some good news is I slept on my side last night WOOOOO
Before last night I had been sleeping directly on my back with my knees bent!
Weight: I lost another pound today, yay! all in all thats 7 pounds
since surgery and 12 in total. Feeling pretty good about
it, but dont think its really showing :)
Food: My food is going to be pretty much the same for the next few days... simply tea, water, cranberry, dunked rich tea biccys and soup
Pain: not really suffering from any pain really, but, as with the last few days, whenever air escaped my stomach i get a tiny jolt of pain in my left shoulder
Aug 14th: 6 day post op: 154lb Still in an overly cranky mood today, but my eating has improved. I've managed to have a small yougurt and a snap pot of spaghetti hoops.
Weight: Lost 1 more pound
Yay.... 8lbs all together Food: a small amount of spaghetti hoops, some rich teas, a small yougurt, a cube of jelly
Pain: No big pain, incredibly itchy though
Aug 15th: 7 days post op: 153lb After one week my appetite has improved greatly, I am very mobile and active, there is little to no pain, just a small amount of uncomfort. I really am feeling amazing post op
Update: Just went for a walk and I am feeling very uncomfortable and kind of painful, seriously I was not expecting this as I have been in such good health lately. Ohh I just wanna sleep
The pain from the walk went away but I had some scrambled egg and I am feeling bloated and horrible
Weight: After 7days post surgery I have lost 9lb
Wooooooooooooooh This makes me finally under 11st, and I have lost over a stone altogether so yay!!!
Food: 4 rich teas biccys, had one egg scrambled
Pain: none until I went for my walk
Aug 16th: 8 days post op: 153lb For today most of the info will be in the comments section because I ended up having an amazing night in the pub :) despite the fact that I was not allowed alco, and being an avid drinker that is a shocker
Weight: There was no weight loss for the first time , I was kind of shocked by that, but not to bothered
Food: Made a small boiled egg, only manages to eat the yolk [odd enough considering I usually hate it
] .... Also had some mashed potatos, about
4 teaspoons worth with gravy and butter
Pain: not to much pain today, but I had other cramps so honestly I couldnt really tell haha, I did take some tablets though that night
Aug 17th: 9 days post op: 152lb So, today has been a weird day. While for the last week I have had no appetite, today its at the extreme, I seriously want nothing to eat, I am just sipping on water and tea.. although the amount of liquid I can fit in my stomach has dramatically increase!! But yeah other than that I am not even craving the taste of food I am just happy to be sippin' away! Maybe its an empathetic hangover for all my family who got wasted last night while I stayed sober
Weight: YAY, another pound down, I am loving this weight loss!!
Food: no foodd, just tea and water
Pain: too early to tell
Aug 18th: 10 days post op: 151.5lb Havent eaten anything today other than a cube of jelly, been pretty bored all day, absolutely nothing to do
Weight: Only lost half a pound, but that works for me
Food: a cube of jelly
Pain:No pain
Aug 21th: 13 days post op: 149lb Got to have a few drinks last night YAY :D and ate some rich teas :)
Weight: So I am finally bellow the 150lb mark :)
Food; 4 Rich tea biscuits, 4 rum and blackcurrants
******************************************************************************************I have just turned 20 and had my Nissen Fundoplication on Thursday morning (Aug 8th) in Galway University Hospital. I had been admitted to hospital the day before. I had a hiatal hernia, horrible acid reflux and would throw up regularly. I've basically had it my entire life and it had been horrible and embarrasing!
When I was younger Doctors would ignore my complaints because I never felt nauseous and as I was so used to it, I barely complained! However, I am pretty sure my hernia and vomiting resulted in a pretty crap immune system. One lucky day when I was 15/16 I went to the Doc for something completely unrelated and there was a trainee Doc in the clinic, I informed him of my complaints and to my surprise he offered to arrange an endoscopy. I was delighted, finally someone paying attention!
Despite my GPs desire for me to wait a few months to "see how I felt" I went ahead with it. I had to wait a few months for the Endo. Once I got it, they found a Hiatal Hernia but the nurse told me
(while I was doped) that without any further hernia's they were unlikely to do anything.
Fast forward a few months, another trip to the GP with something unrelated, another trainee doctor who decides to actually help me and arrange an appointment with the head of the Eosophagael dept. in my local hospital. More time passes, I meet with the head of the Dept. he arranged a PH test, manometery and a barium swallow. The PH test and Manometrey were done a few months before my 19th birthday. As I was away for the summer I didnt recieve the Barium swallow till about
sept/oct. By Nov I had my finally apt with the head of the esop dept. He agreed to my surgery, which came a lot later than expected and I only got in this month due to that fact that there was a cancellation.
Moral of the story, It takes a crap lot of time to get anything done in Ireland, especially if your Docs ignore you
******************************************************************************************]Some Things I found helped: Take pain meds before pain starts, sleep in a raised position, walk to reduce shoulder pain, and don't over exert yourself. Ohh and FYI I was able to let small burps escape after surgery.
Honestly, up untill the day of the Op, nerves weren't really a problem but waiting to be admitted, brought into theatre and all of that had me a little shook. So for anyone feeling like that here is what I have to say:
STOP! Once you go in, you are knocked out and two minutes later your awake and no more worries As of today (5days post op) I have had no reflux symptoms so I am absoultely delighted
