Heartburn (?) after lap nissen

I had the lap nissen done almost 4 weeks ago. I'm definitely making progress and able to swallow well chewed soft food (mac and cheese, wellcooked veggies) but now I am battling what I can only describe as heartburn! So very painful! What is causing this? What can I do? I'm still taking Nexium because I'm afraid to quit, I'm eating simethicone chews like they were candy... what else can I do? I'm so dissapointed to still be suffering with this kind of pain (much the same as acid reflux) after having surgery I thought would fix it cry

It's unlikely to be heartburn. What you're actually feeling is the healing process. "Heartburn"-like pain is how the esophagus communicates pain and discomfort. At this point the swelling is approaching it's peak stage so that sort of pain should be expected. Nexium won't do anything since it's not acid reflux causing the pain. Motrin or other over the counter pain medicine should work just fine if you're now off the narcotic pain medicines your surgeon gave you.

I hope you are right. I called my surgeon and he wants me to try prilosec OTC for 2 wks. If things don't change he wants to do an upper GI.
