Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on the Stretta procedure. I understand it is getting good results. I have had 2 failed fundoplciations and continue with a demeester score of 50 and thats on high dose medication. any thoughts much appreciated.

Hi Gaviscon,

Sorry to hear about your Nissen problems.  Does your doctor have an idea as to why your Nissens didn't hold? 

Unfortunately, I don't have any knowledge about the Stretta procedure, but did do some searching online.  It does sound as if it is having pretty good results.

What about the EsophX procedure? That's a newer surgery that seems to be getting good results. I considered it, but because I had a hiatal hernia, I was not a good candidate.

thanks for info - will look into it. Currently have no idea why fundoplciations have not worked.

Hi Gaviscon99,

 

Did you have both surgeries done by the same surgeon?  Have you considered going to a university center or larger facility and getting a second opinion?  You're obviously a high risk case, and it probably makes sense to get another opinion from a highly experience redo doc.

hi. yes both surgeries by same surgeon. They were done in large centre and in fact surgeon who does them is regional expert who take referrals from other surgeons who are not as experienced so I think I was in good hands. Currently getting repeat investiagtions - barium swallow and endoscopy with bravo to assess whats happening. Once these are done I will be seeking a few opinions as to what my options are. Currently I see 3 ways to go - try a furthr fundopliication but since first two failed may not be good idea, stretta procedure - resonable results and if fails other techniques can be used, or gastrectomy with roux en Y - major surgery with lots of risks. so stuck between a rock and hard place. any thoughts gratefully recieved.

It sounds as if you had a very capable surgeon, so it doesn't sound as if that was the problem.  I wish you the very best of luck with your testing.  Hopefully your doctor will find a way to help you for the long-term.

I found this resource about failed wraps online.  It's technical, but I think you could figure it out.  The tricky part is navigating through the document.  There's a scroll bar at the bottom of the page, and you scroll through pages from left to right.  Hopefully you'll find it interesting.
