Just had my surgery 16/9/13

Had a sleepless night due to a noisy neighbour who was sleep talking but don't feel too bad and had no shoulder pain and liquids seem to go down ok. They kept the tube in my nose overnight and was regulary pumping out some horrible looking fluid. When I first came round from sedation I was in a lot of pain and shaking with feeling cold so they gave me a load of pain meds and that did the trick. I'm a diabetic so they are keeping me in another night but the surgeon said he was really pleased and that the surgery went really well. Will keep everyone updated on my progress.. time for a nap.

I also just had my surgery and I am having more of a positive experience then an negative one. Today is 4 days out of the hospital and 6 days since surgery and I have the laparoscopic type Nissen. Surgery went really good and I am a special patient due to having bad kidneys and a leaky heart so I have a total of 7 MDs and 4 nurses and 4 anategolost so 15 ppl to perform surgery. As I said in my pervious post I also was blessed w one of the top surgeons in the USA! I also am blessed becuz i have my hunny Mike to fully b like a nurse and Measure everything plus crush all my meds and has be feeling like i am being cared for Immensely. Anyways enough bragging. I have done swelling and pain which is normal plus I'm sticking directly by the diet to the T. I'm doing 6 meals a day limiting to 4oz food 4oz fluid. Yes liquid is annoying but in 3 days I get mushy foods added which is exciting. The docs also have me on 2 pain meds and 3 gas meds. I have noticed the gas slowed way down after 3-4 days and I am on Zero PPIs or GERD meds just some nausea but I know I can't puke. Oh yesterday I had my first "over kill" moment and my stomach swelled which was almost the worse pain I have ever felt so now I am sticking to everything my financé and docs said no more eating a ton. I will b posting when things happen I wonder tho y it hurts when I yawn??anyone know y?? Oh and for ppl w hiccups --the reason that happens is ratting too much and has build up. I am here to share my story and give advice to who ever needs it Ty and god bless to everyone 😀

BrandyLeigh: Yes I know what you mean about making mistakes about overdoing it, I'm on day two and feel like I have overdone it with eating and drinking. Old habits die hard. Will take it a lot easier from now on. Hope you have a speedy recovery too.

Ian: was you still suffering reflux symptoms the first few days after surgery or did all your reflux symptoms go immediately? Seems I'm still suffering but its very early days for me. It doesn't help that I have diabetes which I think makes matters worse. All the best on your recovery anyway.

I am not suffering from any reflux symptoms. My reflux ended the moment the surgery was completed. Go slow and don't rush anything. Be patient and your body time to heal. I'm on a soft food diet. Sometimes I don't chew thoroughly and things get a little rough when food goes through the wrap. That will improve with time. I'm still less than a month out of surgery. I have a way to go before resuming a regular diet.

Brandy, I had trouble yawning and my chest hurt for the first 5 days. It should get better. I am on day 7 and those issues are gone.

Good luck with a quick recovery, but take it easy.

Brandy, I'm sorry, but I have to take back the yawning answer from above. I had to yawn last night and it just wasn't happening and I had that chest pain. :( I wonder if it is because of the surgeon doing work on our diaghram, too?

Yes, I had Nissen, I'm day 8 post-op. I also had a very large hiatal hernia repaired along with the wrap.

I watched some youtube videos last night of the nissen. Wow! It was really interesting, kind of scary, though. Watching the tiny instruments at work, without damaging tissue, nerves, veins, etc. is amazing. What talent these surgeons have!

The anesthesia and pain meds  frequently cause constipation post-op.  I was told to use a mild laxative like Senna and was sent home from the hospital with an RX for this as well as instructing me to use OTC Miralax.

My surgery was bowel surgery so I was treated to an enema before leaving the hospital.  The Saline Enemas from any drug store are handy to have available at home.

Do call you Dr. and ask what he recommends.

Feeling a bit better now and not so low, the narcotic meds knocked me for six.

I have still got a horrible sour taste in my mouth so not sure the surgery has worked. Maybe the diabetes has given me an acidic body hence the acid taste and nausea and burning. Might give an alkaline diet a go. The complan diet i have been taking makes the acid taste worse., I m really hoping its just early days and once all the swelling settles down so will my symptoms.

I took a senna last night and managed a movement this morning also got a good nights sleep which made me feel better, also walking the dog and some fresh air was energizing.

I have left my bandages on as they are waterproof and will take a shower later, the hospital gave me a spare set should I need them. They have started to itch though so might just take them off, how long do the steri-strips stay on for?

Yeah, I was given liquid codeine, paracetamol and ibuprofen. They all have a sickly sweet taste which gives me a sour mouth. The codeine I have stopped as I read it gives constipation and also I think was a factor in giving me a low mood. The soluble ibuprofen is what they give to children so will stick with that and tough out any pain, my body doesn't handle drugs very well.

Could you shower with just the steri strips on on you had to wear the waterproof bandages over them?

Will take a nice shower tomorrow morning then and get rid of those sticky bandages that are making me itch.. Cheers.

I had the glue on my incisions, too. It took forever to come off and I still think I have one left. I picked some off. :)

I'm sorry I can't help much with what you are going through, but would think recovery would be tougher and longer if u suffered complications. Does sound strange having a wrap that is too tight and still getting reflux, I was lucky in that my surgery had no complications according to the discharge and the conversation I had with the surgeon after my op. I wish u all the best and hope u get fixed up soon.

lajenner: thanks I had a lovely shower, removed the sticky bandages after and just left the steri-strips on. Will give it a few days and remove those too, hopefully they are healing with no problems.
