I am a 64 year old woman who had the Nissen Fundoplication on April 1, 2011. I have never looked back after having. If not for the wonderful people here at this forum, I would have been a wreck after my surgery... MOST (not all but most) surgeons do not have a clue what happens throughout your recovery.. they can give you the the basics and can be unparallelled in experience doing the NF, but as good as my doctor was, he tried to prepare me for recovery but he had no clue... the people here at the GERD Forum were a life save for me. when I had an issue.. they let me know if it was par for the course or if I should get in touch with my surgeon..
The people who post here are speaking from their experiences.. it may happen to you it may not.. everyone recovers differently.. some can eat relatively normal diets as soon as they get home.. I could not.. Doc told me at 3 weeks I could begin adding foods to a soft diet.. I took much longer.. after 4 weeks I was eating soft chewable food.. at this point after 2 1/2 years I have to be careful still how much bread I eat.. others have no problems with bread after 4-6 weeks.. You know what your body will allow you to eat.. if you feel nausea or pain.. don't eat it for awhile.. try again in a week or so... you have to go at your pace.. no one elses.. I had complete trust in my surgeon.. still do but, he never went through this surgery AND recovery... he can only relate what he knows from being told from his patients.. .. I would return to him again without question.. I trust I will get the "rest of the story" from my friends here at the forum... I hope you will trust them also...
I was diagnosed prior to my NF with Asthma, onset COPD, I was taking 2.. 40mg Nexium per day and I was constantly getting sinus infections, bronchitis, and on and on and on... since my NF I have not had a cold, my asthma is gone.. no COPD, no more sinus infections etc etc etc.. in other words, in my case, all of my issues were reflux induced...
This forum is to let everyones experiences be of benefit to others.. we can only relate to all about
what we experienced. If they are experiencing the same thing, they can get some comfort by know that what they are experiencing is not abnormal... that is why we all ask that everyone stick around and relate back to all of us what their recovery experience is...
Please stay with the forum and let all of us and future members know how unique your recovery may be... thanks for the help and Welcome to the wrapped club....
if you are at day 12-14 you may feel something like a full feeling at the bottom of your esophagus, that is your wrap being swollen.. at about
day 14-16 your wrap will stop swelling and at this point the swelling will begin to recede. Also, the esophagus is a "dumb" organ and it reflects any discomfort or pain to be reflux... please be patient and watch your diet for another few days to a week and it should begin to clear up.. if it is worrying you call the doctor and relate your experience..
Please come to the forum if you have questions or concerns and you will hear from others who have experienced what you are going through.. they will support you as they did me.. I came here with triumphs and downfalls.. they supported me and gave me advice.. they showed me they cared...
Sorry I have been so long winded but I wanted to let you know how much you can benefit from the wisdom and experience that the great people on this forum can offer... and to let you know what a valuable source of information you can be to new members coming in...
again .. Welcome
