Hi everybody.I am 21 years old and recently i was diagnosed with Medium sized Hiatal Hernia with Gerd symptoms and mild esophagitis and gastritis.My main symptoms were constant stomach burning,like 24/7 but never heartburn,only burning around the belly button,i was easily nauseated and bloated and when i lied down to sleep i couldnt roll to left or right side because i would be nauseated..I started taking omeprazole and after a couple of days the burning stopped.However its been almost 20 days since i started taking omeprazole and the other symptoms didnt go away..My main problems are the rolling over in bed and the nausea...Sorry for the long introduction,my main questions are: Nausea and the rolling over is it a gerd thing or esophagitis thing,aand after some time will it get better? And when i stop omeprazole,will the burning come back or was it because of the esophagitis? Thank you for your time

Those were similar to my symptoms. I needed the largest prescription dosage of omeprazole to feel better, but I still had stomach upset. It did not go away on it's own, with medication - it was just controlled. I started out with a small hiatal hernia and it got larger over the years. I was told it started possibly because I had large babies. It may have increased in size due to a lot of ab exercises over the years. We really don't know why some have hiatal hernias that never cause problems, and others have major issues because of them.

You should discuss this with your GI doctor, further. Many doctors are quick to tell you take meds, but they don't discuss the future. I blame that on the pharmaceutical industry. You really have to be push with many doctors these days. I wish I had known to do that many years ago.

My problems started around your age. I'm now 54, have dealt with it ever since. I finally had corrective surgery earlier this month.

Maybe others have recovered with medication, alone. I hope you get more comments here.

I feel your pain. I am also 21 and have been dealing with the exact same issues as you for the past couple years. My hernia flared up recently and along with it my dormant GERD. My saving grace has been liquid Carafate! It has always calmed down my stomach when acid begins to take its toll.

The nausea sounds like the GERD, its always a symptom for me when my GERD flares up.

What kind of hiatal hernia do you have? Sliding or paraesophageal? Neither will go away on its own.

Para needs surgery. Sliders may need surgery if they are large or causing intolerable symptoms, uncontrollable with medication..

Ask your doctors what they recommend.

I have a sliding hiatal hernia. My GI doctor is insisting that I exhaust all alternatives before recommending surgery due to my age. Sometimes I just want to get the Nissen, deal with the recovery and be done with it. Lately my stomach has been sore to the touch beneath the sternum. This is quite common when my hernia is flared up but it's annoying nonetheless.

I also have sliding hiatal hernia. Bossbrew same with you,i just want to get the Nissen,although i am a little afraid of the possibility it doesnt work and make me suffer more..Anyway,thank you guys for the time you took to answer me,wish you all the best!

Mine was a very large sliding hiatal hernia. I had to have it repaired because I was inhaling stomach acid, proved by a bronchoscopy. I had no choice but get it repaired. I was on prescription acid reducer or blocking drugs for 34 years prior to surgery. My GI doctors had never mentioned the possibility for surgery to correct the GERD at any time. It was by chance I learned on my own about surgical intervention last year.

You really have to get pushy and advocate for yourself with many doctors.
