I'm about
halfway through week 5 off the PPIs and things are starting to seem like they are going in reverse. I've thought about
how my diet has changed since the beginning and what I have come up with is that my raw vegetable and fruit consumption has gone down and my meat and whole grains has gone up. The reason for this is I started missing some of these things so I thought that if I'm not feeling as much heartburn, it couldn't hurt to eat more of these. At first it didn't affect me so much so I thought it was working good but after doing this for a few days, it's now starting to backfire.
Because of this I started searching for other alternatives. A diet consisting of a lot of fruits and vegetables isn't working very good for me as I am always feeling hungry for something and eating more meats and whole grains seems to keep me satisfied but it also brings on the heartburn. I have known about
the paleo diet for a while but never really looked into it. I did som research and found that one of the big things with the paleo diet is that it (in a nutshell) converts your body to turn fats and natural sugars (from fruits) into energy instead of carbs from grains. I have noticed that when eating some meats that have some fat to them, I don't get nearly as bad heartburn compared to eating a whole grain granola bar.
I have decided that I will be taking another turn in my diet and try to go down the paleo path for 30+ days to see how that works for me. I stuck to a fairly high vegetable/fruit and low meat/grain diet for a little over 30 days so this shouldn't be hard to do. I rarely eat cheese anymore and I don't drink milk or any other dairy products and I have cut out all processed sweet foods so that won't be a problem.
Here is a big reason why I believe the paleo diet will work better for me. When I eat meat, I feel satisfied. I still like vegetables and fruits and everything I buy is always fresh, not canned or frozen. Paleo diets don't restrict you to eating certain portions but I wouldn't count on eating any large portions of anything as long as I get heartburn from it. I'm also getting tired of looking at the clock and eating at certain times of the day to try and stop the heartburn by snacking between meals. I'm hoping that by cutting out the grains in my diet (since that's pretty much all I have to do to go paleo), it will help with my problems. Basically the only grains I have been eating are whole grain bars. In the past month, I've only had pasta twice. I figure that I have about
another month to go before my gastrin levels are almost back to normal too so hopefully this will help with that as well.
Edit: The reason why I started eating more whole grain items is because of all the information out there that for energy, you should eat complex carbs (whole grains). There's also information everywhere to cut back on fat. The paleo diet says the opposite so I figure that I'll give it a try. 8 years of being on PPIs and eating unhealthy (usually went through 2-3 family packs of oreos a month), I figure 30 days of higher fat, lower carb diet won't hurt anything.
