Surgery next week - caught a cold

Its really hard to say with colds. I really have no idea, but I would that that the only big thing that they might wait on is any coughing or sneezing since its so hard on your diaphragm and incisions.

I had a lung infection just before my surgery, and I was so afraid that they wouldn't do the surgery.  I was told, though, that as long as I didn't have a fever, it was a "go". 

My lung infection continued after my surgery, and made my recovery a little more difficult (with severe asthmatic coughing, and my husband pounding my back with lung PT in order to get my lungs cleared out of mucous).  My internal tissue was very fragile due to steroid overuse, so my surgeon added some extra stitches to hold things in place.  Even with my constant and severe coughing, thankfully everything worked out fine.

My situation was a "Catch 22"...my lungs weren't likely to improve until after surgery, so they did I anyway.  I'm not sure how they'll deal with a cold, but if it's garden variety without a fever, I expect they'll go ahead with it all.

Hi Elle Jay,

As a fellow asthmatic, I understand your concern.  Colds always go to my chest as well.  I expect your surgery will go on as planned, though, and if you have to cough post-op, just hold a pillow tightly to your belly, and don't worry.  Your wrap will be fine.

Ugh... woke up today coughing up all kinds of gross stuff so I called and left a message with my doctor's nurse. Hoping they give me an antibiotic to clear it out instead of postponing surgery. I'm so impatient I keep checking my phone thinking I missed her call.

Sitting at the pharmacy right now waiting for an inhaled steroid, oral steroid, and antibiotic. Sounds like they're confident it will be cleared up by Thursday.

I had my paraesophogeal scheduled back in august, caught a cold at pre-op, and the rescheduled me to Nov 29th. Wish I had this support group back then! I may have pushed harder to just have surgery instead:( I have been struggling so badly , absent from work one or two days a week since September, totally using up my sick days before I'm even recovering! Grrr but my health and comfortability during an acute time is more important I must remember.Thank God I have pre-op today, I am excited to the ball rolling on this corrective surgery! Only 10 more weekdays till surgery( counting the weekends makes it seem too long) I am reading about all the post experiences and taking them to heart, I will listen to my body and hope I don't have any breathing difficulties, I already have asthma issues. One of the things I am looking foreward to is not being anemic any longer:) pretty much my while young adult/adult life I've been anemic and they could never find the cause! Nasty Paraesophogeal hernia! I need my blood supply! Along win all the other things

Annyjolie, sounds like we'll be going through this together. I'm scheduled for the 21st and got a pretty bad cold turning to bronchitis just 10 days prior so now I'm on steroids and antibiotics...and being told to rest but that isn't gonna happen. We are moving this weekend and have a whole house to pack still. Ugh. Can't avoid stress.

Yikes moving!!! Why don't these things have better timing?hope all goes well and surgery is a breeze compared to all the xtra you are having to contend with! I got home from pre-op and am so glad the ball is rolling on this procedure!!! Healing vibes: ) thank you Dencha:) glad I found this place!

Welcome Annyjolie - like you - I'm so glad I found this forum before my surgery.

Yeah - happy you can move forward and get yourself fixed! I'll be thinking about you this week.

I have a final check with my general doctor tomorrow morning to actually clear me for surgery. I've never heard of having 3 pre-op checks but I guess that's what happens when you're special!

I will have a definite answer by this time tomorrow if surgery is happening Thursday but right now I don't see any reason why it wouldn't.
