GERD or costochondritis? ugh

 so I still never know what's causing my pain - costochondritis or GERD?  I have been taking my GERD medicine but not everyday.  and I notice in the winter my costo is always worse.  but I just got a sharp pain in the middle of my chest and it's sore to touch.  still causes me anxiety no matter how many times it comes back. 

does anyone know how to tell?  my docs say that if I can push on it and it is sore, then it's costo but a lady up here at work said her GERD makes her chest and back sore. 

I don't know if I should take ibuprofen or not.  makes me crazy!!!

I got it after my open nissen redo and my surgeon also said if you push on it and it hurts it's costo.

I'd try the ibuprofen and see if it helps. I definitely feel for you. I had to hold my shoulder forward to keep it from hurting.

no I just think they meant that if you press on the pain - it's more than likely costo. I have heard this a lot before too but i'm just annoyed that I can't find a concise answer from any dr. guess I will have to have an edoscopy to find out.

My Costo hurts when I press in specific locations and upon deep inhalation.

If the pain comes on when walking does that indicate it more one than the other?

Also, would it not be better to try Ibuprofen gel topically rather than taking tablets and risking increasing any stomach issues?

How long does Costo last or is it a permanent condition?

My Doc said Costo is related to arthritis and will probably be with me forever. He said NSAIDS and I said I can't take them, so Tramadol for me.

MMM - I want some kind of topical pain thing so I don't mess up my stomach too.  my PCP just tells me to take anti-inflammatories - I don't want to all the time! 

my osteo I went to just wanted to inject my chest with steroids.  sounds painful.  ugh  maybe I should just do it though!  I want to feel normal.  I swept my whole house yesterday and today i'm in pain and my upper back hurts again.  I don't feel out of breath - just like I don't want to breath right prolly cause of the pain.  sucks!!! 

I think some people get it chronically michelle.  I suppose i'm one of them for some reason.  only autoimmune disease I have is hashimotos hypothyroidism.  wonder if that can cause it?

Oh My....I have hashimoto's hypothyroidism too. But I never notice Costo. Only after mesh repair and I noticed the sternum was hurting.

mine all started when I used to carry my 3 yr old a lot and lifted heavy things. now it comes back especially in the cold. I have read that it can be caused from bracing, either from stress or from the cold weather.

now today though I feel like I have a lump in my throat which I know can be gerd. I might have both. who knows.

I am having severe tightness in the upper back. I figured it was the cold but I didn't relate it to Costo. This has been going on for a couple of years. I also thought it was from the surgery but I didn't think it should last 4 months. Very interesting. I am glad I saw your post.

there is a doctor that has a website about learned relaxation or something like that. practiced relaxation - kinda like meditating. I need to do this daily and exercise. i'm just not even sure I should walk with it. every single time I try to start an exercise program, I hurt. I can't even get in shape. ughhhh

My thoracic surgeon had my take the prednisone pack for mine. It was like 4 or 5 pills the 1st day and then 1 less for a week. Much easier than getting the injection. I've had so many steroid injections from nerve damage in my ribs they don't hardly hurt anymore, but I's still rather take the pills.

After I took the pack I still had a little pain for about another week and then it was gone. Just a suggestion vs ibuprofen or injections.
