10 years post Nissen and still good!

Glad to say that I am now >10 years post Nissen and I'm still going strong smilewinkgrin

I had my Op in the North East of England back in October 2003 when I was aged 35.

Haven't had heartburn (apart from a small occurrence lasting a few days when I had shingles - any lurking medical students want to try to explain that one???) or a single PPI in all that time and still have no problems to report.

Had a "tight" wrap so still can't burp or vomit, but to be honest I really don't notice this as an issue anymore and just eat and drink what I like when I like - though I still chew more but I don't have to think about this anymore, I just do it subconsciously.

I do have to take an occasional ant-acid or wind-eze (gas-x in the uk) if I over eat, but that's no different to anyone else who hasn't had the Op.

Thought I'd post a positive story to give hope to anyone suffering as I was back then and worrying about the risks that there are a lot of success stories out there too (and the success rate is way higher now than it was 10 years ago!).

Here's to the next 10 years of looking forward to Christmas dinner and not worrying about the after effects.

How lovely to hear. I'm really pleased that you had a successful outcome.

I'm in the UK and had my op 5 weeks ago in Cambridge so it's still early days for me. Yes I'm going through all the usual of thinking this hasn't worked for me. I keep getting symptoms but I'm told by everyone that it's early days yet. So fingers crossed !

It's so kind of you to get on the forum and let us all know that there is hope.

I'm really glad to hear that. Means a lot, especially over the ten year mark and still doing good! None of us want our wraps to fail after ten years. You give us all hope.

Hi there, I'm also in the north east, had nissen four weeks ago. It's good to hear your success story, I'm struggling with a massive relapse of LPR symptoms, hoping this will settle down soon. I am burping so much! Surgeon says its from swallowing air into the oesophagus. I hope this goes away soon.

It's great to hear from you! You are so right that people in recovery need to hear from others who've had the surgery and are doing well. Thanks so much for taking the time to share you experience!

My guess about why you had the "reflux" during your bout with shingles (poor you!)...the esophagus interprets all pain as reflux...you may have had some nerve endings in your esophagus affected, or just reacting to the pain you were experiencing. Or meds you were taking weren't making it through your wrap and sitting a bit at the wrap site. It's unlikely that it was "true" reflux. More likely pain experienced due to another reason.

BTW, it's scary to think of it, but you can get shingles internally...http://www.medicaldigest.co/internal-shingles/ I'm not suggesting that you had the problem to the extent mentioned here, but it could easily have caused pain/"reflux" when you were in the throes of your shingles attack.

I'm no med student/doc, but it surely makes all kinds of sense to me!
