Can Nissen cure bitter taste that causes bad breath?

After eating 3 hours, I have bitter taste in my mouth and it causes bad breath. It lasted for 2 hours, then go away.

I've searched this forum and find that many people have done the Nissen surgery and failed and this symptom even worse. It still remained there. This makes me depressed.

My doctor told me the Nissen cannot cure this symptom. Anyone has any idea? Is there anyone succeed?

Yes. It was one of the first things I noticed actually. To be honest it wasn't something I was thinking about in terms of things that would improve, but my mouth feels so much cleaner now that I've had my nissen.

I think you are reading the posts that are very early on in the peoples recoveries. Early on you can still have reflux type symptoms because of the swelling and such. Most people actually have a huge improvement with these symptoms once their body has had a chance to heal.

Not sure what your doctor is basing his opinion that the nissen doesn't fix this issue, as it has helped almost everyone I know who has had this problem. Me included.

Something to remember is that people who have this surgery and don't have any complaints usually don't post anything on the internet, but those who have issues will post about it quickly. A lot of the times it is premature as they end up with great results once they wait for the healing to happen.

This surgery isn't a couple weeks and you are better thing. This recovery takes time, months in fact. For me it has been a life saver and has allowed me to eat anything I want to again.

@opnwhl4: thank you, I will convince him to do the surgery for me, I need his permission to do the surgery. I'm in vietnam, so there isn't much doctors can do this surgery. He says I don't have a hiatal hernia, so he can't do the surgery for me.

I had my Nissen to cure horrible asthma causes by reflux. My GI doc didn't think the surgery would help that, but it did. It took many years of persistence by my PCP before he finally sent me to see a surgeon.

My surgeon told me that the Nissen would help my lung problem if it was caused by reflux. That's the problem with atypical symptoms. They're not as clear-cut as regulars, straight-forward GERD symptoms.

There are no guarantees that all atypical symptoms are caused by GERD and will be cured by the surgery. That said, if your reflux is making it to your mouth, a Nissen will certainly help! Like me, you have to take a leap of faith and hope it does the trick. I figured that I'd exhausted all other possibilities and options, and was willing to take the chance that the surgery would work.

In my experience, GI docs are very hesitant to suggest surgery for anything but clear-cut typical GERD, and those of us with atypical symptoms have to push our cause much harder to get them to offer the surgical option.

Have you had the testing done? That will give you and your doc some important information. Good luck with it all!

Thank you. I had done some test like endoscopy, my lung is normal, i don't have hiatal hernia.

I sure I have GERD. I have sore throat, chest pain, acid tongue, bitter taste. Sometimes I wake up, I can feel the reflux very strongly in my throat. I guess my LES is very weak. In vietnam, there is not machine to test the LES.

My doctor agrees with me that I have severe GERD. And he says this disease is very hard to cure, even with the surgery. He is a GI doc and also a surgeon. He is the fourth doctor that I met. All three doctor that I've met before both said the surgery cannot cure this disease.

Actually, I'm very depressed now (edited) because I'm not married yet. I still don't have a girlfriend. No girls will go out with you if you have bad breath. I dont' want to live forever alone. But after reading your post, I get a little hope....

Thank all of you, I will try my best to fight this disease...... I will convince my doctor to do the surgery for me, even begging him.....

Getting emotional about it isn't going to help, you need to keep advocating for yourself. Have you had a PH study done? They let me do the nissen just because of the results of that alone. Hernia or not you need to stop all that acid from rising. The acid can cause lots of other problems down the road.

@diaas2: In vietnam, there is not pH study. That's a shame. GERD is extremely rare in vietnam, so they don't buy anything to diagnose this disease.

I wouldn't have had my surgery if I didn't have that test done. It's the one test they took seriously.

Try to avoid anything sweet or acidic. I am 3 months post op and still get the bitter taste if I eat sweet/acidic foods. I have noticed since surgery the bitter taste isn't as prolonged after eating as before surgery, now it will last an hour or two. I am treating my gastritis at the moment with 600mg ranitidine and glutamine and the burning has gotten a bit better in just a few days, as have a lot of my reflux symptoms. I will throw some pepsin GI into the mix when it arrives as I've heard its a great stomach healer. I have bad breath from the reflux/gastritis and I'm hoping that will get better too.

@Albez: Thank you for suggesting me this

Today I have an appoinment with my doctor. I was intending to show him this thread to convince him to do the surgery for me when he said: "I've discussed with the other doctors and we decide that we will do the surgery for you". So I don't need to convince him anymore.

So he says I have 2 options: Nissen and Toupet, 360 degrees vs 270 degrees wrap. He says the Nissen is more effective than the Toupet but will get dysphagia (difficult swallowing) easier than the Toupet.

And I say: I'm not scared of dysphagia. So I choose the Nissen.

I will go to the hospital to do some more test on 12/21/2013 and do the surgery on Sunday 12/22/2013.

Hi,

I have read some scientific studies on the net that indicate that 70-75% of patients with LPR get improvements from the Nissen fundoplication.So i would love to hear from people who saw improvements as i have that problem too.

Also dairy gives me big problems with mouth problems as yesterday had horrible sour/bitter taste all day and reflux symptoms after eating some quiche and yogurt. I'm booked into to see my surgeon on Jan 2nd so will ask for some tests to see if my wrap is still in place.

9 days since the surgery.

I've never imagined the pain after the surgery. So hurts. It hurts a lot.

My bitter taste symptom decreases about 50-60% after the surgery. I can't belch. I fart a lot.

Food goes down easily to my stomach. Is the wrap too loose? I can feel food pass the wrap.

All that's normal. These are things that can happen after the surgery. You're symptoms can improve more and more over time. Do your self a favor and don't jump to any conclusions until a lot more healing takes place. And by time, I mean several months. I don't know about the wrap being too loose. You'll have to wait and see

Wow you seem to be doing good i thought the first two weeks were supposed to be liquid diet and you are moving food past the wrap already.I'll be following your journey as i also have LPR right now.

I only drink coconut water on the first three days, then I eat Cháo (food in vietnam, made of rice, very soft) until now. It looks like this, I don't know what it called in english:

Today I eat normal meal and it causes reflux like before surgery.

My LES is very weak. When I lie down, acid run into my throat immediately.

Today I eat rice too fast so it stucks on the wrap for a few minute. Just report my recovery.

Try to not let it bother you too much. I know it can be very frustrating, I'm about 9 weeks out, I've experienced most of the same stuff as you've posted so far. It gets better! It actually sounds like you are eating more much sooner than I did. I ended up losing 30 pounds in the first month.
