Dear Healing Well Community,
After 8 months of dieting my GERD seems to be resolving successfully. Access to this community did so much to bolster my mood, maintain my persistence and fidelity to the diet! I cannot thank you enough-those of you who gave advice and those of you who shared symptoms and side effects from foods/medications/supplements.

In October, I quit Zantac after being on it for about 6 months because I was noticing growing bladder irritation. Unfortunately, I didn't quit quite soon enough as I have now see sawed into an annoying and chronic problem. I have the new diet to lower bladder irritation.

Some things that seem to have helped the resolution of the Gerd are slippery elm, powdered aloe vera, and nutritional yeast and of course the no acid, no spice, no fat diet. I have no more night time issues with acid reflux, no more burping, no more strangling feeling in the chest, no more difficulty breathing, and very little lump in the throat. Hurray!

Hi shifting

I am on 300 mg of Zantac and was wondering what type of bladder irritation it causes? You mean you go to the toilet more frequently? The side effect I have is itching but even that is getting less

Can you give more detail on the report about Zantac. It's warning was for.......
My doc recommended Gaviscon over Zantac. I do take a ppi once a day. But, for some reason he didn't like me taking both.
I have Barrett's so a once a day ppi is highly recommended and I will take that until the LInx is further researched and reported on.
Actually, I am Barrett's free as I have had area ablated.

Good to see you here! As I'm reading your post in this thread I would like to tell you that I addressed myself to you in the LINX club Part 9 thread www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=45&m=2907607&p=4 in case you have not seen it because of it no longer being on the front page. If you do not know anything to reply there, no problem. I just want to make sure you have read it.

You mentioned you had your Barrett's ablated. Was the ablation painful? How many times did you have the ablation? Are you in the US?

Zantac is used for some patients with interstitial cysitis - I can't imagine that being the case if it causes bladder issues! I have a very sensitive bladder but I'm fine on Zantac.

I have read that being on Zantac for so long isnt much use anyway as your body counteracts it eventually.

PPIs are probably the best medication if you need to suppress acid for longer than a few weeks.

hi guys. the happy turtle here. i am on the depression forum but i am having all the same probs. i have been put on somac, it is helping. i did not know about the acid food and stuff to keep away from so i am gratrful. i was using zan-tac as well. thanks for the heads up, it was making me feel weird. i came to the forum to look around. i am an insulin dependent diabetic who lives with nocturia, mental illness and hormone issues, arthritis, diabetic retinapathy.

i am due to have the heart test, the one where the speed up your heart, this scares the hell out of me. i am having pains in the chest and down my arms as well. i am aware that severe acid-reflux and heart problems mimmick each other. the intense intense burning was so severe that it was not funny. i can handle pain but this something different. thanks for letting me say g'day and reading some posts to learn a few things. i may have gord or berrets or hpv. still learning about them. i am arranging an appt to see a specialist tomorrow. the referal has been sent.

The truth is, all of the acid reducers have long term effects. PPIs may cause a greater amount of acid to be reduced (you will have greater acid reflux relief with them) but they also block the absorption of calcium carbonate and vitamin B12.

If you take calcium citrate, the calcium will be able to be absorbed without the stomach acid you'd usually need with the calcium carbonate that you find in most foods and most other calcium supplements. Citrate has a much weaker molecular bond, and is thus easier to break down for your body to use.

I'm currently better on Zantac than the PPI with symptoms more stable, less flare ups and episodes of pain and more importantly without any of the side effects I put up with for far too long! Many people used Zantac long term before PPIs came on the market and it's still a viable option. If I'd felt great on the PPI I'd probably have carried on but they don't suit everyone!
