globus hystericus (feeling lump in throat)

globus hystericus is the feeling something is in the throat. many things can be linked to this problem. gerd is one of a few. followed by anxiety, depression, and pretty much mental disorders.
my husbands surgeon mention this in his first visit with him, because this feeling something is in his throat is the first thing he complains about. it controls his life.
my husband has been to an en&t specialist, having 6 unnecessary surgeries trying to fix this problem. recently we read that gerd produces this feeling because the acid rises from the stomach to the mouth. the valves at the top and bottom of the esophagus are becoming trapped. after the nissen fundoplication surgery, the acid has to stay between the esophagus and the mouth because it is trapped there. and what is between the two, the throat.
now esophageal dialation is an option for this globus hystericus, which stretches the esophagus with a balloon type apperatus.
since my husband is only 4 days post op, he has to do some healing before he can have this procedure done. he has always said that swallowing big pieces of food help soothe the discomfort that is so noticed by far more than the gerd itself. he also takes a medication called amitryptaline and ativan to help with the anxiety he suffers with this problem. but since he has had these issues for more than a decade untreated, the ativan does not work like it use to. the amitryptaline is newly introduced to him.
he suffers with insomnia as well and the ativan helps to aide this as well. hopefully this info will help someone to move forward and don't hesitate to talk to your doctors about these meds because they have no idea how you suffer with these issues. and if it can help you, why not?
i am just very concerned about this disease and everything it entales because I see first hand how scary and life changing it really is. everyone thinks they know heart burn, i thought i did, but i have seen the distruction it can do. gerd is scary stuff, and i truely feel bad for all of you that suffer with it.

he had a deviated septum fixed because of post nasal drip, direct laryngoscopy, tonsils, adnoids, tubes put in his left ear, and tissu e removed from his throat for biopsy. he takes 2mgs of ativan twice a day.
sorry to hear your problems with that medication, and having a dry throat is frustrating. everything connected with gerd seems to be frustrating though.
he still has the full feeling in his throat accompanied by the burning sensation. everything (symptoms) are centered only on his left side. he has chronic chest pain, eye, ear, and even back pain. which he takes 50mg of ultram for his pain as needed for pain. but the ultram causes you to feel very sick once it starts to wear off. he has chronic nausea and regurgitation. back in 2000 he had a scalenectomy ( the muscle on the side of the neck next to the collar bone along with two ribs removed through the same incision).
we figured the doctor that did this surgery maybe interfered with the phrenic nerve, but through testing, that was ruled out. however, still 4 days post op, he wonders about the vegas nerve maybe having been damaged.
when he was 10 he fell off a grapevine and convulsed and seized almost swallowing his tongue. so he has had tramatic injuries that could have caused many of these symptoms, but gerd has been the only diagnosis so far.

yeah I feel for your situation too. my husband had the bravo test done on 3 occasions and complained about the discomfort for days after the pill finally released. he hasn't really mentioned having dry throat, but definately hoarseness and burning sensation. he clears his throat a lot and he always has ricolas to help soothe his throat.

Thats a very good thing. My throat hurts so bad i cant talk and it has devastated my life

The doctors dont know if i have LPR or nerve damage or both. I suspect both at this point even though i never feel any heartburn. I had a Restech test, but it malfunctioned and didnt work right. Also had the Peptest which showed alot of pepsin in my throat. My quality of life is unmanageable. I had trouble with my left hear when the Bravo probe was implanted. Up until this time, i never had any ear, nose or throat symptoms. Now i have every miserable symptom in each one of those areas. I have on ENT who thinks it is nerve damage and he wants me to try Neurontin, Amitriptyline, or Lyrica, but i have terrible reactions to medicine. Ive tried every natural thing i can think of including the aloe vera juice. My kitchen counter is overflowing with dozens of natural remedies that have not worked. And i cant take any acid blockers because they make me very sick. I dont take any diuretics, but i am certain the ativan is causing the xerostomia. Any help is so greatly appreciated. Thank you.

my husband never had heart burn either. he had a typical chest pain, he said yes he had a hard time talking also, especially at the peak of his reflux. he had acid all over his voice box. when he went for his motility test to see if he qualified for the nissen surgery, it malfunctioned, they wanted him to come back another day and do it again. he refused, drove to his doctors office and begged for the procedure.
the bravo test is not very accurate either, i don't know why they even do it.
we tried all those remedies too without any relief. amitryptaline is used for anxiety, but also is suppose to help with the lump in the throat feeling. since my husband suffers from insomnia, he takes the ativan to help him relax so he can try to sleep. i would stay away from lyrica and neurontin. like i said dexilant is the only medication that gave my husband any relief. he still has the feeling in his throat, chest pain, and even a little reflux still after the surgery. i miss him, he just exists. unable to do anything he wants to because this throat pain controls his mood, his happiness, his entire life. before he started dexilant he just sat in his recliner, not saying a word, going through a whirlwind of emotions, he hadn't slept literally for 11 days. the only thing that would relieve the pain in his throat was beer (it numbed the area), sitting in the sun, halucinating. it was scary! finally when i took him for the test on his phrenic nerve, he ended up being admitted to the hospital because during the test he became unresponsive. they took him into the er and they ran test after test. they gave him the million dollar work up. they discovered his lactic acid levels were unbelievably high and habituates in his blood. the habituates were the ativan. they were going to release him on the thought that he was just crazy and depressed. of course he was depressed, he is very sick and nobody would listen to him. the surgeries he didn't need. and yes anyone that hasn't slept for 11 days are going to go crazy. so i spoke up and told them he was suicidal. they got security to sit outside his room to monitor him until a phsico therapist could evaluate him. she came asking a multitude of questions and when she saw it wasn't his mind, but his sickness she ordered he be put in the sleep study of the hospital and be given a cocktail of sleeping pills. she wanted him to sleep for at least 72 hours. as soon as he started to fall asleep, the acid would torture him, they thought he was having a heart attack too. the next morning they took him for a barium swallow and dicovered the culprit. spontanious gastroesophageal reflux disease. spontanious because the reflux would happenfor no rhyme or reason. he could eat spicy foods and drink anything and never get heart burn.
it's been a scary 6 months now since these attacks started to really show its ugly face. hopefully all of this info was helpful, and stay in touch. i am always trying to help you guys out

And i get so angry when anybody suggests that its depression causing the problems. The problems cause the depression.

I often wished i lived in another country where they would put me in the hospital and do the tests that need done to figure out what is going on. I need help

sorry i missed one of your posts. instead of the nissen, have you heard of tif? this is the procedure my husband really wanted, but we live in west virginia and there are no surgeons that do this surgery here. the closest to us that do do the tif are virginia and ohio, but my husband is always nausiated and couldn't handle a 5 minute drive let alone a 4 to 8 hour drive. he has motion and non-motion sickness.

Journey72, i will look that up. I had a video fluoroscopy i think but im not sure its the same thing?

Here are some things I've done to help with globus.......

1.chew gum (no mint)

2.throat lozenges

3.liquid mag/cal with vit. D

4.aloe vera (soothes & heals damage)

5.manuka honey (mix with warm water drink as honey tea)(very good healer)

6.garggle baking soda

7.amitryptaline (helps with hypersenstivity)

I assume your husband has made major diet changes, if not you must do this. The vergas nerve can be easly be upset by reflux and yes it causes all kinds of hell. Chest and back pain is common.

IMO, do not let him get the tiff surgery. I have yet to come accross anyone with good results. As a matter of fact a member here (sixness) had it done and it made problems alot worse for him.

Motility is very important for the success of any gerd surgery. Without good motility if you have surgery you may have even more problems.

Yes he has tried all of that. He always has a pocket full of ricolas, and drinks peppermint tea w/honey. Yes that helped tremendously before he had the nissen 6 days ago.
Chewing gum he did also, but can't now because it allows air into the body, so it's a big no no. Also, no his diet never really changed, because he is totally about eating healthy, always has. He won't go to McDonalds, that kind of food goes right through him.
Really the only thing he did before the surgery that was doing harm, was drinking beer. The only reason he drank beer, was because it helped to numb the globus hystericus, and was an aide in helping him relax.
