Hi Squanto,
Curiously you are developing issues at 33 years old which is when i was initially diagnosed with small hiatus hernia and put on ppi's for a while.I am now 57.I had about 9 good years without the ppi's after initial healing and then reflux came stronger and i have been on ppi's for the last 15 years. Now i am trying to ween them off but i don't think it will be possible as they affect the function of the lower esophagal sphincter and create a dependency. If i can reduce the dosage it should help reduce the long term side effects.
All this to say that it is not all negative for you. There is a lot more information about GERD out there now (including this great forum) and the ph/mannometry tests although annoying for sure (i'll take them anytime before an endoscopy without being out) provide great information about the intensity and frequency of reflux plus swallowing capacity.I had my first one about 3 months ago after 1.5 year wait but should have that much sooner (doctors never suggested and i had to push as it was normally 2 year wait) .It will help determine what is your best treatment. As for the chills i am having them everyday this winter as i lost a lot of weight on the Gerd diet and trying to get off or reduce the ppi's.The long term use of ppi's has made it much more difficult for me to process/absorb the fats so i eat much less of them but that leaves me chilling and i can't wait for winter to go.
A few days ago i discovered a great website called REFLUXMD.com which is run by doctors/specialists mainly dedicated to GERD and acid reflux and they can even answer questions for free.I found my first info. to help managing the ppi medication and it's great.Suggest you go and take a look there as there is lots of good info.
Do your research as my doctor did not tell me much.Mke sure you really need ppi's before going on them long term. All the best in your treatment.
