I think the pain is from acid damage and not excessive swallowing, but I certainly do have a lot of pain. What saddens me is that I though having this surgery and being heartburn free would allow me to start exercising without the feeling of choking, but I am still getting that when I try to work out. I went speed skating yesterday, and every sprint I did ended the same way, with a burning feeling in my throat telling me I am choking. I know at this point it can't be acid, but evidently my esophagus doesn't know that. I think what is actually happening is saliva and mucus building up and blocking my breathing tube, but nothing explains the burning feeling.
If I acknowledge that need to swallow is there, it only becomes a more frequent need. The only way I can try to move on with my life is to do my best job of not acknowledging it exists, which is extremely hard to do when it leads a feeling stronger than pain. Since trying not to think about something is hard, I try to force myself to think about other things and not give my brain time to think about the need to swallow, so that it becomes something I do every 5 seconds and don't even think about.
