Sorry about the longer post but there is a lot of information that can help.
If you haven't already, I would suggest giving Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead a watch. You can get more details on how to watch it here: http://www.fatsickandnearlydead.com/. To sum it up, it's about a guy from Australia who was able to get off his medications by going on a juice fast. Although it worked for him, a juice fast may not be the best route for you, but supplementing with juicing would be a great help. I believe the things he states about phytonutrients in fruits and vegetables with how they help the body heal itself.
Unfortunately, as you have found out, most modern medical professionals know a lot about what different medications are supposed to do, but don't know much about finding the source of the problem and fixing that. Through many hours of research, I have found that a lot of our illnesses tend to stem from our digestive system. I think you are on the right track with changing your lifestyle to help get your digestive system on track and help get you to living a better life.
If you are dependent on certain types of foods, then it may be a little harder. The way I think about food is that it is necessary in order to live and I don't need to eat certain things in order to enjoy life. The way I see it is you can say either one or the other about yourself: "I live to eat" or "I eat to live". I can say "I eat to live" about myself but many people tend to fall under "I live to eat". I interpret "I live to eat" as "I eat what I want, when I want, because I love food". I interpret "I eat to live" as "I eat in order to survive and not feel hungry". If your state of mind is not in the "I eat to live" state, then the first step is to get there so you won't be tempted by all of the processed foods that taste good but aren't good for you.
If you you can find a naturopathic doctor around your area, I would also go and see them as they tend to work with you in finding the root cause of your problem and fixing it from the inside out. It may take awhile to see some results at first, but as you continue to stick with it and let your body heal, you will slowly get better. The biggest thing is to never give up. If you have hobbies that make you happy, then it is also good to spend time doing these as well to fill up your time. It gives your mind less time to wonder and puts you in more of an overall happier state of well being.
If you are on PPI's, or any type of acid suppressing medication, then you will also need to start getting off of them. I cut off cold turkey at first, but I would not suggest that as it was the worst few weeks of my life. I would slowly decrease the amount as you change your lifestyle. Supplementing will also help. I haven't tried everything that is suggested and not sure which works better, but I know that different items will help. A naturopathic doctor would know which ones to do based on your symptoms.
I'm not sure how much you know about how acid secretion works in the stomach or not but I'll give a high level view. The body will determine the amount of acid to produce based on the foods you eat. When taking acid suppressing medication, your body doesn't think it's producing enough, so it will create more gastrin (which is what tells the body how much acid to produce), but the acid suppressing medication prevents the acid from getting produced, so your gastrin levels build up. This is what makes it difficult to get off the medication because when you stop, your gastrin levels are way too high and you are producing too much acid. This is why you need to taper down gradually. Once you start to allow your body to produce acid again, it can start to break down foods as it is designed to and the healing process can begin. Without allowing your body to produce acid, you will have very little success in helping your body heal so you can live a better life.
I hope this information helps you in your journey. I can help you find more information on anything specific if you want. Just let me know. I tend to research almost every food I eat and determine if it is really helping me in my goals or not. I also do a lot of research on any supplements I have taken as well as different parts of the body to understand what each part of the body is essential for in order to make sure I am taking in what my body needs in order to work correctly. One of the biggest things is to understand how your body works in order to know what to take in so your body can do what it is designed to do.
