Question about stomach acid causing coughing.

Hi all,

   I have GERD, but it's been well under control without meds for awhile.  At least I think it has!   I've had a little set-back recently because of being on antibiotics, but hopefully that will clear up soon.  Here's my question:   Can we have coughing and wheezing, because of stomach acid coming up to our throats at night, but not ever feel it, or have any heartburn??  It seems strange that that could happen, but I'm open to possibilities.

   Several years ago, when I was on aciphex, I developed a wheezing in the back of my throat, mostly on expiration and mostly at night.  In the mornings, I have lots of mucous in my throat, and have to do alot of coughing to get it up.   I cough a fair amount during the day too.  (I don't smoke and my lungs are fine).

   I'm curious if we can have pumonary and throat symptoms from reflux, but not have any real feelings of heartburn?  Thanks.

Hi Cathy, I was really interested in your post, cos thats exactly what happens to me. I am taking 30 mgs of prevacid in the morning and 15 mgs at night. I wake up in the night regularly with mucus in my throat and this makes me cough and choke. Also i cough in the day all the time. I have been told by my G.I. doc that this is because of the acid getting in my lungs. I never get heartburn. If I try to cut down my dose I get really bad sore throats because of the acid burning my throat. I hate being on this med but I get such awful symptoms when I try to get off it. I have had sinus infections in the past and get head aches and feel really ill without the prevacid. When I had a gastroscopy recently the doc said my oesophagus looked ok cos it was protected by the meds. maybe thats why i don`t feel the heartburn. I wish i could be brave and stop the meds like you say and go through the barrier. Vanessa

Hi Vanessa,

Sorry for all the problems you're having. When I was on aciphex, it seemed to help alot of problems for me......more than just stomach acid. So I can understand your reluctance to get off of it. Isn't it amazing how our stomachs can look okay, when we feel like everything above it is on fire?
Have you ever tried to raise the head of your bed up, for sleeping?

Hi,

I had the very same symptoms before finding permenant releif using a reduced carbohydrate diet. Yes, you can have the cough, sore throat without the heartburn. I feel terrible for the many people posting here, because I have found a solution and documented it in my book. Unfortunately, I cannot mention it as it would violate the rules of the board. 

I have found and documented evidence that the consumption of excess carbohydrates is the root cause of GERD and by reducing your carbohydrate consumption you can completely eliminate acid reflux. This is the only dietary approach that I am aware of, that really works and it only takes a couple of days. Please give this approach a try.

Hi Cathy, thanks for the reply. Yes, I have the head of my bed raised with three thick books. Poor hubby keeps sliding down the bed, in fact, so do I. Try to do all the right things. Dr. Norm interests me with his carb thing. Have spoken to him by e-mail. When I first started with heartburn in my teens, I only got it after eating pastry or thick bread. But everyone on the forum seems to get it with something different. People say milk is bad, but I thought milk was an antacid and seemed to help before starting on PPI`s. It`s all very confusing!! Hope you are well at the moment. Vanessa

Yes milk has been reported to provide releif. Unfortunately, the releif is short lived because I belive the lactose (two sugar carb) in milk results in gas production by gut microbes driving reflux. Try unsweetened soy milk instead. If you want it sweeter, use splenda or an other non-carb sweetner.
