2 days post surgery

Hello everyone,

I had my surgery two days ago, and was dry wrenching at the hospital, I was given anti vomiting drugs via the needle thing in my hand, and then later by injection.

This morning I had more dry retching, followed by a huge burp and regurgitation of the small amount of yogurt and fruit I had eaten.

I am now terrified that I will have done something to hurt my wrap. I am also scared to eat anything.

How would I know whether to phone my doctor?

Thanks very much Bill, I have anti sickness tablets to take, I guess I should take them routinely for a little while, rather than just wait until I feel sick.

I also have a very sore neck and shoulder for some reason, perhaps from wind or trying to get up. Hopefully it will wear off soon.

I have been reading through the forum and am so glad to find such sensible advice.

Hi Bill,
Thanks again. I think that the neck and shoulder pain is now easing a bit, and I am just taking paracetamol and the anti sickness meds. I haven't had any reflux symptoms at all since the op so things are looking good so far!

I am 14 days post op today. The burning you describe, can you feel it in your back as well? Just wondering if it's part of the surgical sites inside. I had bad back pain between my shoulder blades that I could feel in the front. I was initially confused as to what it was b/c it was a strange pain. Felt different then everything else. Then had the shoulder and neck pain which I still get now when I try to eat. Both pains felt different but I was told it's the co2 they pump in and referral pains from surgical sites and the vagus nerve.

Otherwise I'm thinking it's possibly from the inflammation over all and when you drink or eat it worsens. Just my thoughts. See what seems to help and not help and you may be able to narrow it down.

Yes you need to be much more patient and use the meds when you need them.

As things continue to swell you can have reflux sensations. A swollen wrap doesn't work as well and the esophagus is a dumb organ and senses any pain as heartburn basically. It can be in the front or in your back as well.

I am now 6 days post op, and trying to force myself to eat more. I have lost 12lbs in a week which seems excessive.

I have also been suffering from really bad headaches, some migraines which is a worry.. I have been waking up with the headache...not a good start to the day.

Are you taking narcotics for pain? That could be giving you the headaches. My other thought is either you stopped the narcotics lately and you are having the withdrawal/rebound headaches. I got those. Took a few days to go away. Could be low blood sugars too which I also get. Not unwrought intake with enough nutritional value to sustain you or dehydration. Could be any of these or just simply a bug you picked up as surgery and the trauma of it weakens your immunity, along with the decrease in nutrition.

I lost 11 lbs in the first 6 days so almost the same. I had just lost 15 lbs in the 2 months prior to surgery training for a half marathon. So needless to say I'm getting a lot of comments. I have since lost another pound but seem to have stabilized. I'm struggling to eat. I'm 17 days post op now and still managing just full fluids. We're you the ideal weight prior to surgery? I can stand to lose weight and another 10 would be ideal for me. You mat begin to stabilize at this point.

Can you swallow ok? Are you taking the nausea meds? You need to stay at least hydrated. If you're not peeling regularly and peeing light'ish yellow in color, you need more fluids. Are you drinking smoothies or meal replacement shakes? That's what's saving me. As for driving, I didn't drive until 12 days post op. Be sure your head is clear if on pain meds and you feel alert enough. Does your drug store or grocery store deliver? You could just call it in. Not sure where you live. Or maybe a neighbour or friend could go get it?

Hope you feel better very soon. Headaches can be so debilitating and with them along with your nausea, be sure you are drinking please.

Glad someone could run to the store for you. Hope the drinks and possibly being able to eat more will get rid of those headaches and stop the nausea. I had quite a bit of nausea initially but cleared at about the one week mark. I suffer headaches with the odd migraine. They are brutal and debilitating. Yes......onwards and upwards!

Has anyone suffered urine retention following NF? I am on day 7 and am a bit concerned about this tonight - I have been drinking loads.

Hi Shari,

I have been reading a lot of posts and a couple have mentioned some urinary retention or difficulty either starting to urinate or empty bladder. I don't know how common it is. I struggled greatly the first night and part of day 1. I chalked mine up to no pain control b/ c I couldn't take the pain meds. Maybe call your surgeons office just to check in. They would know better. I'm not much help. Hope someone has more insight. One persons post I read was a week after surgery too. Hope today gets better for you.

Here's hoping the laxatives kick in and you feel better. I was constipated at first too. Didn't have a BM for the first week after surgery. Very unlike me. Took laxatives and they worked. Now I have dumping syndrome.:-/
Expected that though. My recovery has taken some strange turns. Definitely bizarre healing process that no one tells you.

Thanks Debra, I called my GP and she thinks it might be the meds or constipation. I am constipated, but have been off all meds for 24 hours now. If it doesn't resolve with laxative then I will call back tomorrow. I now feel upward pressure right across my diaphram - I hope the doc is right.
