Hi everyone
This is my first post and would appreciate your feedback.

I had the Linx procedure 3 weeks ago. My main symptoms prior to surgery were severe breathing difficulties due to reflux. I was delighted to find post op that these seemed to have gone for the first 2 weeks. However they are now back although not as severe as before. I am on half the dose PPI from pre op, would like to know is it normal for the symptoms to return? If so will they last long?

Hi Vees,

Welcome to the forum! I'm at the three-week mark as well, so let's compare notes over the next several weeks.

I've also had reflux symptoms greatly reduced. My main problem is painful swallowing and the persistent irritation that comes with it..

It could be that your discomfort now is due more to adjustment of the tissue around the linx and all the irritation that comes with it than it is due to reflux. That's the case with me--I feel irritation that's reflux-like quite often. But I know it's not reflux.

I read on another forum that the esophagus is seen as a "dumb organ." It interprets all pain and discomfort as reflux. If that's the case, especially just weeks after post-op, it's important to keep an open mind about what the discomfort actually is.

Vees, I am considering the Linx procedure for my LPR (worst symptom is breathing issues but I also have soar throat, throat clearing, bad taste in mouth, throat tightness, etc). How are you doing these days? Is the breathing still an issue?

Hi Gondore, I had the Linx operation just over a year ago, my breathing issues are much improved. I still have occasional breathing symptoms, these are no where near the severity of pre op. Have not taken prescription medication since a month post op. Although not 100% I am glad I undertook the procedure. Sorry to hear of your suffering

Vees, thank you so much for your reply! Can you give me more details on what your breathing was like pre-op (i.e. hard to inhale or exhale, what did it feel like, did activity make it worse, how often did you have it) and what it's like now post-op? Also, did you see relief right after the procedure or did it take awhile?

Breathing problems started suddenly overnight, waking me at night as if someone was sitting on my chest. Problems predominantly inhaling very tight feeling on chest and throat. One day I would be fine and I could do hard cardiovascular training the next day out of breath from one flight of stairs or sometimes just talking. Bearing in mind I have always played a lot of sport and trained regularly this was highly unusual. Often I would experience an almost burning like feeling between my shoulder blades. No real relationship to symptoms and activity if upright, but bending and lying down particular after food caused problems. Once problems started it became an almost daily scenario and seemed to be worsening. I could feel sensation of vapour pushing up from my stomach into throat and nose. On very bad days it felt almost to be irritating my eyes. Symptoms much improved immediately with more improvement over time.

Wow, our symptoms sound similar. What would you say you where on a 1 to 10 before surgery and what would you say you are now? Also, how hard was the Linx recovery for you?

Felt like a 1-2 mostly pre op on medication. Now no meds with some a Gaviscon about 8. Recovery not bad at all just some swallowing difficulties approx week 4 until 3 months, seems to be fairly standard.

Vees are you active again like you used to be? Did you any experience any ear problems (i.e. dizziness or liquid feeling in your ear) from your reflux?

Not as active mainly as fitness levels reduced through lack of activity. I have been training again and getting there slowly

Do you feel like you can pretty much resume your regular life now? Who performed your Linx procedure?

My symptoms are as follows though some of them come and go....throat clearing, throat pain, throat tightness, acid taste in mouth, bad breath, shortness of breath, lots of cavities, and chest tightness. I have also experienced the vapor thing you are talking about....for me I can feel it coming up and it feels like it goes right into my sinuses and causes me to feel "off". I have had LPR for at least four years.

Have you seen anyone regarding this so far? What if any meds are you on, are you considering surgery, are you in London region?

Yes, I have seen a couple different doctors and have tried PPIs on and off over the years. The PPIs don't really seems to do much for me. I am also only 32 so I would like to avoid the PPIs if possible. I have done pre-op testintg. Endoscopy showed grade I damage and 3 cm sliding HH. Manometry was normal. 24 HR showed 101 refluxes in 24 hrs and a DeMeester score of 27.9. I am in the process of scheduling for the Linx. Since we symptoms are so atypical though I have been trying to make sure the procedure is going to provide me with some benefits. I am located in the US. Would you mind telling me what your pre-op test results showed? Did you have a HH and if so did they repair it?

Yes I had HH repair, I am not sure of my scores as I had everything done in a rush. I had to schedule the operation around practical exams for my studies to enable to continue without too much disruption.

Gondore additional symptoms were tightness of chest and burning sensation between shoulder blades.

Kerry1983 my description of acid vapours was the feeling of air or vapour flowing up and reaching as far as sinuses and eyes causing burning sensation and impacting dramatically on my breathing.
