Hi Mary Lee,
Yes, you can have acid reflux and LPR (silent reflux). When you experience silent reflux, it does not stay in the lower part of the esophagus very long. It shoots straight up to the back of your throat, which is why you do not always feel the burning sensation with silent reflux.
You mentioned that your doctor wants to increase the dosage of your proton pump inhibitor. Unfortunately, this is not the answer to the problem. Increasing the dosage can also create more problems for you. PPI's and H2 blockers only treat symptoms, they do not address what the real problem is.
PPI's can cause delayed gastric emptying which is what happened to me after taking omeprazole 20 mg for 11 days. The doctors do not seem to be aware of this, but there is info on the internet linking PPI's and delayed gastric emptying. I wish I would have only known this sooner. Also if you ever try to quit taking a PPI after being on them for 2 weeks or long, you experience Acid rebound, which is a horrible experience.
