what could this be?

Hello everyone,

I'm a 24 year old male who has been on PPIs for a year now. I had an endoscopy done last summer and all was well except for minor irritation.

So last Friday I get unbelievably bad heartburn all day, and I can never usually feel the burn at all. Then on Saturday it hurts down in my chest to eat, and Sunday it hurts to even swallow liquid, and feels about the same today.

Is this just irritation from the bad day of burning? Could it be something else like hernia, cancer, ulcer? It seemed to come on in just one day. This hasn't ever happened before.

The only thing I can think of is that I did take a quite large L-Arginine pill before the gym Friday with little water and it was in the gym when lifting weights that the burning started. Could this be the cause?

Hi John
Same exact crap just started with me. I haven't been on meds for years for ulcers/reflux so it flipped me out when this started a week and a half ago. Same here with food and water and meds. It feels like I've taken a mega bite off a steak and didn't chew it. Mine symptoms started with a sore throat and a swollen gland or something on the right side of my throat. Two days of that and then bam...the esophagus/tracheal pain.
I finally got to sleep last night sitting up in bed and woke to no pain. I didn't dare to drink water or eat but water is critical so drank some. Then more. Then I ate scrambled eggs for dinner along with some canned sliced cooked potato's with no fat FrancoAmerican beef gravy, and some wax beans. I chewed disgustingly long before swallowing small bites.
THEN I made the mistake of taking my heart meds at bedtime with a habit sized big gulp of water. As I write this it's 1:30am and I'm having the lump pains again along with jaw pains, dizziness, and rumbling stomach.
I didn't get but 4 hrs sleep prior to this and I'm beat! And I'm not as young as you are! lol

From what I'm learning exercise can bring on an onset of LPR/GERD because when you strain you increase the pressure below the LES (lower esophageal sphincter valve). This allows acid up into the esophagus where it isn't supposed to ever be. Do you really need the supplement you take before exercising?

Health anxiety is an easy trap to fall into. Unless you have medical confirmation of a real problem don't adopt one while figuring out what you're going through. You may end up having health anxieties longer than the actual problem!

Could be a hernia....could be hernias.....VERY DOUBTFUL it's cancer. Go see an ENT for a consult to put your fears to rest and start on a cure for the rest. Be prepared to give up spicy foods late at night just before bed though.
