Wondering if people could update how things r today with your surgery ...and problems....success ?

I will be having the nissen wrap and hernia repair in two weeks. I have suffered for a number of years from GERD symptoms that were pretty well controlled with meds until about a year ago. By then the GERD had caused me to have asthma, regular laryngitis, and (most annoying) a chronic cough. It had gotten so bad, it was affecting my ability to do my job as a teacher. After numerous visits to my general practitioner, he finally agreed to sent me to a GENT. After an endoscopy, the GENT diagnosed me with a hiatal hernia and atypical GERD and referred me to a surgeon. After many more tests, the surgeon finally agreed that surgery is the best course of action and I am finally, finally having the surgery soon! It's been such a long and painful road just to get to this point. Although I am a bit nervous, I am so looking forward to this surgery. I figure that no matter what the success rate is, I cannot feel any worse that I do right now.

Reading all the submissions from others that have gone through the same GERD misery as me, and what you have gone through post-surgery have really helped to realized that this surgery is the solution for me. I think being able to talk about everything with all of you will help me deal with recovery so much better that dealing with it alone.

Im 8 weeks post op. Not feeling good at all. Neausated all the time but ftom what I hear its normal until my stomach heals. Can anyone tell me when they started feeling better after surgery

Deniesa andjeans could u keep us posted on your progress......good lunch to both of u ....I've heard the nausea can last a while but it eventually subsides for good.....

My long awaited surgery is tomorrow! I am equal parts excited and nervous. I will update once I am able.

Hi had op fundoplication 26/7/14 in SYDNEY DURING op a temp prob punctured my wind pipe so had open surgery ...in hospital for 8 days im 70 at home know this site has helped me to understand my pain more re my conditions thank you im 70 and this my 1st time to post a reply sorry if iv miss used the forum .cheers stoksey

I'm having the laparoscopic hernia repair and nissen on the 23rd this month. My reflux is well-controlled with PPI's, but I just don't want to take those pills for the rest of my life because I worry about nutritional imbalance caused by suppressing stomach acid. I also have a faint hope that my IBS-d will improve if I don't have to take the PPI's. Third, the hernia is of the transesophogeal type with possible complications if not treated. I'd prefer to get it fixed rather than risk having emergency surgery, especially if the problems start when I am older and less able to recover quickly. I'm 54 this month. I hope I've made the right decision. It will be done at a smaller regional hospital near my home. Maybe I should have it done at a larger university hospital but I don't want to travel very far. The surgeon has about 20 years experience. I enjoyed reading a lot of useful info about the patient experience on this forum. I will be posting again soon.

I'm 52 years old and am 3 months post-nissen. I also had a hernia repair along with my nissen. I had my surgery done with robotics by a surgeon who was very experienced with the procedure. I have to say that I didn't have a lot of the side effects/complications that a lot of our friends have experienced on these boards. I had absolutely no gas/shoulder pain post surgery. I was able to swallow without much of a problem, almost immediately and progressed with my diet transition very slowly. I had some bouts of nausea, but nothing that Zofran didn't fix. I was fortunate that my employer gave me unlimited paid leave, that helped. I didn't get my strength back right away and that was frustrating. I did lose 25 lbs, and am feeling pretty darn good! I would absolutely recommend this surgery and am glad that my pulmonary specialist (not my gastro doctor), encouraged me to have further testing. My reflux was actually causing frequent bouts of bronchitis, and had been struggling getting any relief from PPIs. I have not used a rescue inhaler or taken Protonix since my surgery. I only experienced nausea on occasion, and it didn't last very long. I was very diligent about having many small meals throughout my day. Zofran worked for me, some people have good results with Reglan. Have you contacted your surgeon or your PCP? They may have some other suggestions for you.

I am allergic to Reglan. It makes me feel really weird. Can you check with you Dr. if some patients have this the next time you talk to him or her. My doctors are not much help to me and cant give me a yes or no answer

You really need to speak to your own doctor. Every patient's recovery is unique and there are quite a few other medications out there that may be helpful to you.

My surgeon has very few patients that experience Nausea that's why I wondered if your dr knew. I guess I just have to ride it out

Nausea post nissen is very common. I keep fenergan on hand to deal with it. With all of my nissens I had it pretty frequently the first 4 to 6 months and then it slowly lessened. My surgeon prescribes me the fernergan still and I am just about 3 years post op. Now I only get it when I don't remember to eat sensibly or skip eating for most of the day, but it occasionally shows up for no reason.

It does get better with time. How much time depends on the individual though. A lot depends on how irritated your stomach is and how long it takes to heal.

Hi jeans,

Here's some information about Phenegran:

Nausea post-op is varied. Some people don't have any nausea, and others, like you, are bothered a lot. There are lots of people in between. I didn't have much at all, but like Bill, occasionally when I really overdo it, I get a little nausea, and the thing that really can help is Zantac. I guess in my case, acid reduction is all it takes.

That said, I always have Zofran and Compazine suppositories with me, just in case. I've had three stomach bugs in the past five years, and the Compazine stopped my vomiting after one episode. Vomiting and retching can be hard on the wrap, and should be avoided. The Zofran is good for th occasional mild nausea.

Sorry to hear you had the complication that caused you problems! It's the first time I've heard of a punctured windpipe during this surgery. The longer I am around this forum, the more I learn! I'm glad that you've healed from that problem and are home and recovering.

I feel like I'm stuck in this situation it only been 10 weeks I don't know how much longer of this I can deal with. . Hopefully passes soon. Im miserable

Hi Jeans,

I know. confused I'm so sorry that you're struggling with nausea for such a long time. Have you ever had a stomach emptying test? I wonder if food isn't moving out of your stomach, and that's causing the problem. Are you making sure you eat very small meals? That is important, I'm sure.
