Taking 20mg Prilosec every day, PLUS an extra 20mg Prilosec every OTHER night (so an average of 30mg Prilosec a day), PLUS 20mg Pepcid a day. Finally starting to feel normal after a severe bout of gastritis that lasted for over a year, and have tried several times to wean off the Prilosec and Pepcid. Removing even 10% of a pill causes agonizing stomach pain, bloating, belching, cramping, the runs, etc., and within 1 or 2 weeks I give up and go back to my normal dose.
I also take DGL, Gaviscon, and Sucralfate when necessary, but they don't really do much when I'm in a lot of pain.
I'm wondering if maybe I really need these meds. Perhaps my stomach lining is worn thin from being so sick last year, and can't tolerate even a small amount of acid?
I don't want to be hooked on meds for the rest of my life. I don't get any side effects, but I know they have long-term consequences. But if my stomach needs them, then I guess I have to accept it. I'm just a little depressed that I can't go back to just the 20mg Prilosec that I was taking every day since 2003 and ditch all the extras.
Has anyone been successful in quitting Prilosec or Pepcid? Has anyone been on large doses for years? Has anyone experienced these awful reactions when trying to wean off them?
