Hi
In no way should you let your doctor convince you otherwise of your symptoms severity, if you feel chest pain might be a possible heart related problem, then please press your doctor to investigate this, but honestly given your young age i would highly doubt its heart problem, heartburn and chest pains are part of acid reflux, it can be so painful that it feels like heart stack for some, for me it was so horrid the pain was not like heart attack but my osophagus burning like mad, i had had a constriction almost for 2-3 days, i found it dificult to swallow sometimes.
When the ppi kicked in, it calmed it all down but i still was getting reflux, wish i never did ppi but that's another story. air would seriously give ppi a chance and you are so young that you;d be fine.
But you must control your diet and for the moment your reflux, but so remember than when you get off pii if you have been on them longer than 14 days, you are going to experience rebound acid where and this painful and last anywhere from 2-4 weeks, you will reflux constantly during this time and unfortunately must tough it out. You can try taper down and it helps with rebound somewhat.
I would go onto GERD diet and if you have fungal infection before it might be best to consult a GI specialist about whether you can go on such diet or if modification us required. If you have gastritis, ppi and sucralfate will help so will gaviscon.
have you been tested for h pylori infection?
I would consider repairing your hernia it might be what is causing your symptom, or you might repair it and it does not help much, but if your doing a fundoplication they usually repair any hernia too. You could ask just for hernia repair rather than full fundoplication, you should discuss this with your GI.
If you don't like fundoplication there are other alternatives, like linx device, stretta procedure, Endostim and I am sure your GI is aware of other new experimental procedures . I personally like stretta , but its success rate is not as wide great as fundoplication but its so less invasive and recovery easier somewhat, its something to discuss with your GI.
