Constipation while recovering

I was wondering if anyone else had problems with constipation.My dad doesn't have regular bowel movements.He isn't really eating much hurts way to much and still getting a lot of chest pains so when he has the spasms we go back to clear for a few days and also uses ensure.He isn't able to handel purée solids yet.so if anyone can help would be great.

I had it from the Carafate, it's on the list of possible side effects, dr. put me down to once a day instead of twice a day plus I used a natural flaxseed type stuff once a day to help me. It worked.

I got bad constipation from using sucrulfate but it went away as my body got used to it.

Is he recovering from surgery? I just had my lap nissen done last week, and it took me a full week to have a bowel movement. I went off my narcotic pain meds for a full 24 hours to see if it would help, and it did. I'm back to taking my pain meds as I need them, and I'm sure it will slow things down a bit.

If he is still on the pain medication, it will be awhile. In the meantime, keep up with as much water and fiber as he can manage. Applesauce has fiber, or you can try something like metamucil. I'd also recommend stool softener, I'd been taking one daily and I think it helped.

Maden, have him use molasses ("Grandma's" unsulphered is the best tasting). Start with 2 teaspoons, he may need more, up to 2 or 3 tablespoons. He can put it in/on anything that suits him, like on a baked sweet potato or stirred in a glass of milk. (I realize he's not eating now, but I'm just saying when he does.) My mom uses 2 teaspoons in a glass of milk every day at lunch. Works better than anything.

Ask if he can use some miralax. I suffer from chronic constipation due to IBS and take it daily, can't go without it! It's generally considered to be very safe but just ask the doctor first. I know how miserable it feels to be that backed up for that long!
