Hi All,
First of all, I am eternally grateful that this forum exists, as it has helped me greatly in deciding on the surgery and setting my expectations for it.
I am a 35yr old male from Sydney, Australia, and have been suffering with GERD for 5 years. Main symptom is violent laryngospasms (choking) that jolt me out of sleep almost every night. Also lost my voice twice (which is a problem as i am a professor), have night time asthma and non-stop burping, (but no heartburn whatsoever). Have also been diagnosed with Barret's esophagus.
After a long process, i finally saw a GI surgeon who did a reflux aspiration scan, manometry, and 24 hr impedance/acid test. Scan showed i was aspirating reflux into my lungs, manometry showed a weak Lower esophageal sphincter and mildly weak peristalsis, and impedance showed lots of refluxing of gas, and weakly acidic content. I now have every reason to do the surgery.
My doctor has done more than 3000 fundos (he teaches it to students), so i trust him completely. But ofcourse still nervous about
potential side effects, as i have three small kids 7, 5, and 2, and being out of action will affect my wife and family.
It is now less than two weeks before my scheduled surgery, and the nerves are starting to build. Yet, Iam also looking forward to the possibility of sleeping at night without waking up choking. (I sleep upright on my couch, but even then still wake up choking. My choking noises (called stridor) wake up my entire house and even my neighbors sometimes!).
Wish me luck, I will keep you all updated!
Jason
