I am new to this but need some comfort. I am supposed to have the nissen fundoplication in a little over a month. But I have one last test to take before I can proceed. Manometry.

I am scared to death of this test and don't think I can do it without a full blown panic attack. I am scheduled for Dec 11 2014. I am calling my Dr monday morning to beg to get out of it or do another kind of test.

I already had the egd. 4 ulcers and a hiatel hernia. Plus deodinitis. Have struggled with ulcers for many years because of this fear. Not sure I can do it this time either. Any advice or guidance?

Please don't call. The manometry test is necessary for the nissen because it checks your motility to see if you will get a partial or full wrap, and most if not all surgeons eant to see your LES pressure. I have a manometry/impedance coming up as well in the next week or 2. I recommend you just relax.

Listen, you must not say no or give up on manometry, it will be a little uncomfortable for couple sec but than you won't feel anything, he will than give you a water to drink it, but you must swallow water once only, than you wait 10 sec again, he will do couple times again to give you water so you can swallow it.

Listen if you could not able to manometry, wait for 1 min and tell him do it again, it happen to me but I did not give up, I managed it, the procedure will be fast, he will than put 24hr ph monitoring, you are going to stay with it for 24 hours. Remember when you puts manometry in your noise to your esophagus, you must swallow to get to the esophagus, its cool.

HAd this done for GERD.... Asked to be put out until everything in place. This worked well for me as I was very agitated and sick!

I will ask Dr about it Monday. Maybe they can mildly sedate me. Some of my biggest fear is having tubes and hoses run down my nose and throat. I know I just have to face my fears. But it is so hard.

I totally get the tube thing. it scared me, too, but the thought of getting stomach cancer scared me even more. I guess you need to think of this as a way to get your life back. you will be glad you did this ..... I will be thinking about you JW

You will be fine, it's the fear of the unknown. It's really not that bad and over and done with quite quickly. Relax and focus on something nice and before you know it will be done.

Thank y'all for helping me feel better. I am not going to call the Dr. I am gonna go have it at 8 am on the 11th. This reflux and pain has got to go. Thank you for all the support!

I hope is goes well for you. I had some trouble with it, vered toward the panic thing and asked to have it stopped. Fortuanely, I had a very understanding nurse administering the test who just kept talking me through it. Once it was over there was no residual discomfort.

I'm not telling you this to make you more nervous, only to let you know if you do have some trouble a good person can help you along. Maybe let your nurse know you're a little nervous and might need some guidance getting through it.

Hang in there, the test is a little mind over matter. I did the mantra" what one man can do , another can do" and that helped . I had a great nurse to give it to me too. Really patient and slow. U can do it.

My Dr. Is going to go with me for this test. Said she understood my fears and would walk me thru it. I am very thankful. Eases my fears a lot. Thank you all for thebsupport.

I wouldn't worry about it, I've had it done and honestly it was one of the more pleasant tests Ive had! I'm not sure why so many say its horrible, I found the 24hr pH test to be sooo much worse, and if you've had an endoscopy well then the manometry is a piece of cake.

I dont think I even gagged once during the manometry, though the end did seem to scratch and curl a bit the first time he tried and I just stopped him and pulled it out, after that it went down fine and only lasted a few minutes.

As you are awake, if you are feeling panicked then you can just pull out the cord yourself, the dr might be a bit miffed but better than you having a panic attack or something. Its not like an endoscopy with all these tubes fixed everywhere, its basically you just sat in a chair, so you can pull it out whenever.

They do give you some slight numbing and that helps. I was scared and had anxiety too. I even talked to my therapist about it. She gave me some good suggestions. Try to relax, meditate, deep breathing etc. It did help because I initially tensed up and then remembered I need to relax and focus on something else.

Believe me, I am the WORST patient, as I'm anxious about any test, but the process doesn't last for very long and when it finishes you'll wonder why you worried at all :) I keep my eyes closed during the manometry as just seeing the hospital setting reminds me to be anxious. Maybe that'll help for you?

forgot about the numbing option. I didn't have it done because I'm very sensitive to chemicals. Maybe that's why I had trouble with the test.

Well today is the day. I am nervous but I think I found a little peace. After this it is surgery in a couple weeks I'm sure. I was gonna keep posting my experience here but not sure how to change the name of thread.

I did want to say thank you again to everyone for the thoughts and help thru this scary time in my life!

It is done. I got thru it pretty well. She only said that she could tell I had a hiatel hernia. The Dr will have to read the rest which could take from a week to 10 days. Then on to schedule my fundo
