Meds not working

Hi All,

  I have been having severe Gerd symptoms for about two years now. 36y M. I had my Gallbladder removed in 2010 and I am probably 50 pounds overweight. I started out on Prilosec 40 and that worked well for about a year or so. But now I am on Prilosec 40 AM and Zantac 300 PM and I experience new worrisome symtoms almost daily. I have been having asthma problems, sore throat, chronic dry throat at night, constant regurgitation (even with water), earaches, sinus problems,thick mucus in the back of throat,globus sensation, food stuck in throat, etc.etc. I had an endoscopy 1 year and 4 months ago which showed a small hietal hernia. And I recently had a barium swallow which again confirmed the hernia and reflux. Is it possible that I am just on the wrong meds, or has my condition progressed beyond medication? I really don't want surgery. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You might want to be tested for delayed gastric emptying. GERD is a symptom of delayed gastric emptying.. and in worse cases vomiting. Delayed gastric emptying is when food sets in your stomach too long and is not being broken down quickly enough. When this happens, It can push food and what little acid remains in your stomach back up the esophagus.

Be careful with H2-blockers and PPIs. I developed delayed gastric from taking a PPI. They can slow motility and cause delayed gastric emptying
