Welcome to the forum, JanPeg.
Did the doc check for blood in stool (guaiac)? Did he do an endoscopy? If there's no blood in the GI system it might be nice if they found out where it's going before surgery. Of course it could be just that you're not making enough.
If you have stomach ulcers, that can cause blood loss. Another cause of blood loss can be from leaking veins in the esophagus. Those can be ligated or stented.
There's no reason I know of for just a hernia to cause blood loss. (Not a doctor!) Is your stomach stuck in your chest - paraesophageal hiatal hernia, or GPEH - or just sliding up and down? It makes a big difference in how much surgery is needed. It's pretty common to get a repair of the big hole in the diaphragm. If you aren't having a lot of reflux, maybe they can do a loose wrap. If the hernia is paraesophageal, and the stomach is stuck in the chest it's important to get it repaired, because it can roll over and strangle itself.
