Sudden loss of appetite 1.5yrs post NF, any one know why?

Hi,
I had a laproscopic nissen fundoolication in August 2013.
My recovery went quickly and had very few complications post op, but for the past 2weeks I've had no appetite and I'm ŵondering if it may be related to my NF?
My doctor can't find anything physically wrong wit me so I'm stumped
I can drink fluids fine but I'm just full all the time and don't want to eat.

Has this happened to anyone else, any ideas as to what's wrong, or is it even related ?

Hello Bcolt,

Given how long it's been since your surgery, I doubt they're related. Does your GI doc have any reason to believe you have a delayed emptying disorder?

Actually this happened to me. I have no where near the appetite I had before surgery. I think I ate more because it helped keep the acid at bay. Since my blood sugar drops on me very easily I have to remind myself to eat.

The things is tht may appetite had returned to normal after surgery, well slightly smaller than normal but still fine, now I'm just not hungry at all.
opwhl4 when it happened to you was it right after surgery or after a few months/year?

Seriously does anybody have any advice or experience with this, because it does not appear to be improving.

I've returned to the doctor and had bloods drawn today and should recieve results next week

Has your doctor considered an appetite stimulant? Something like Periactin? At least in the short-term to kick-start your metabolism again?

Have you had a gastric emptying study - gastroperisis can cause this, or perhaps a stool test to see if you have picked up any bugs?

My appetite had returned to normalish about 6 months or so after surgery and then probably about 1 to 1.5 years it changed. My weight had stabilized and I actually gained back a few pounds after surgery and since my appetite slowed I have lost about 22lbs, but I needed to anyway.

Were you back to eating 2 or 3 meals a day or eating several small meals a day before it changed? When I switched to eating 2 or 3 a day I noticed my appetite was even less. I am back to eating 5 or 6 times a day. At first I wasn't hungry, but I ate on a schedule. I think my body has gotten used to the schedule because some days I do get hungry around my normal meal times.

Hi Bill,
My appetite was completely back to normal, I'd eat when I want and be able to eat decent sized meals. But since a few weeks ago I've had NO appetite at all, if I wasn't forcing myself to eat I'd not have eaten this entire time.
Did you talk to you GI doctor about this? was there any explanation?

The Doctor hasn't mentioned any appetite stimulant and I won't know much until my blood tests results back, so until then I doubt he'll do much.

Also, I have noticed I've been burping a lot more in the last week, more so than I thought possible after my surgery and they are big burps.

Hi Bcolt

Symptoms of Delayed gastric emptying (gastroparesis) is abdominal fullness, burping, bloating, GERD/LPR, and in worse cases vomiting.

I developed delayed gastric emptying from taking a PPI. Doctors are not aware of all the medications out there that can cause delayed gastric emptying. Be careful with PPIs and H2-blockers

Do you have fullness or just no appetite? If you don't a fullness and just no appetite it's probably similar to me. My surgeon said it could be from scar tissue and such around the top of the stomach. This area is what tells us we are full.

Just yesterday I hadn't eaten all day and finally made myself eat about 12:30am today. I was at a softball game a we finished at midnight. I last ate about 4:30 pm Thursday. Even when I ate I had about 12 fries and half a regular cheese burger from McDs and was couldn't eat anymore. I know I don't have gastroparesis as I dump a lot when I don't eat regularly and had the test for it too.

This morning I grab a small muffin about 1.5 inches or so and a small glass of milk and am full.

I'm full all the time and hav no appetite for food. I'm full without eating and can't bring myself to eat more than a tiny amount for the whole day, for example yesterday I ate a small sausage, over the course of the day, that was all. I hate to cut a tiny piece and chew it till it liquidised before I'd even swallow it, I genuinely feel full 100% of the time and I'm only so concerned because I'm exhausted from not eating and not getting enough vitamins etc

You might need to start drinking Ensure or some similar nutritional drink so you can get nutrition and some calories

Yeah I'm going getting some high calorie drinks so that I can keep energy and nutrition up, but I am wondering if anyone has had Gastroparesis, as I've looked it up and I've experienced no nausea and vomiting so it may not be it

Yes, you can have delayed gastric emptying without having nausea or stomach pains. I did not stomach pains for a long time with my GP. I never experienced the nausea. Not everyone will have the same symptoms. I have listed some of the symptoms below. Symptoms vary in each individual.

signs and symptoms of delayed gastric emptying includes :

Nausea
Vomiting
Abdominal distension
Bloating (feeling of fullness even after a small meal or few bites of food)
Early satiety
Heartburn (gastroesophageal reflux, acid reflux)
Excessive belching
Lack of appetite
Unintentional weight loss
Gastric pain – left upper abdominal pain
Fluctuation in blood glucose levels – high and low blood sugar
Signs of vitamin deficiencies as a result of malabsorption
Offensive odor of the breath
Altered bowel movements may be noticed, particularly constipation
Dehydration, especially if there is constant vomiting
