Hey guys. So I'm 18 years old and having my laproscopic nissen fundoplication on March 3rd. I'm concerned because I think I might be on my period. Which is first of all, just really embarassing and awkward and sucks. But I know they all have seen worse. I was wondering what exactly happens in terms of wearing underwear, etc. Have any of you gone through this?

And how was the pain afterwards, and so forth? I'm not nervous about the surgery, but just wondering? Thanks!

Hi I really wouldn't worry. Think they probably won't bat an eyelid. I had normal underwear on so think you will be fine to wear a pad.
Your pain should be well controlled but you may have done shoulder pain from the gas they pump you up with, it's uncomfortable but bearable and disappears after a day or two.

Thank you! and also for anyone who's had it done, how long did you stay in the hospital. My doctor said I will be there for one night but I know alot of websites say 2 or 3

It all depends on how you feel and how well you tolerate the procedure and the level of pain you're in. My surgeon told me a minimum of two nights, but I ended up with three because of a complication that kept me an extra day. I've also read that some people are sent home the same day (I couldn't imagine doing that!).

In short, it all depends on how you feel. I wouldn't expect to be kicked out after one night if you weren't able to walk easily on your own and couldn't tolerate the pain without significant medication. If your surgeon says one day, I'd plan for two and be happy if you're able to leave after one night.

I was one of the unfortunate people that got sent home about 5 hours after surgery completely not with it at all. I'm due a redo and different surgeon has told be to be prepared for 2 nights which seems much more realistic. Suppose it's different surgeons.

Yes, a catheter will be inserted.

I was in the hospital overnight and did not have a catheter. I was able to get up and use the restroom, without assistance, directly after the surgery. I did not experience the gas pains in my shoulder, but it may be because I had my surgery done with robotics.

I didn't have a catheter when I woke up, but I expect I did during the procedure, but I'm not sure. Just a guess.

Do to the positioning and possible length of this surgery I was told they do use a catheter during surgery. It it very often removed as soon as they finish though, sometimes not.

I woke up with the catheter after my 2 redoes, but it was removed after my 1st nissen.

I unfortunately started my period the day before my fundo. They gave me paper panties and a pad to wear while waiting on the surgery. it came off when the cathedre went in, but I was asleep and never knew the difference. when I awoke, I had a large pad under me and was clean. thank goodness. the nurse helped me put my panties and pad on. it was too hard to bend for a tampon. and change into a gown.

I stayed in for two days. I was walking the hall the first and second day trying to relieve the gas pains in my shoulders and neck.
