Hi.  Is it possible to get breakthrough heartburn while on Prevacid?  I was on it for a couple of years and I was fine.  In fact I was on 30 mg and dropped down to 15mg.  A couple of weeks ago, I started taking the generic Walgreens version and my symptoms came back.  So several days ago I went back to brand name Prevacid but I'm still having very slight heartburn.  My question is twofold:  Can you get breakthrough heartburn while on Prevacid?  And could it take a week or so for my body to get used to the brand named Prevacid after stopping the generic?  I'm thinking I should bump it back up to the 30mg until things get under control again.  In fact, I don't think I ever told my doctor that I dropped from 30mg to 15mg!!!  This stinks after feeling so good for so long!  Thanks for your insight.

Yes you can get breakthrough acid with this drug - it's called lansoprazole here and I was on it for about a 6 months at 15mg when it became apparent that I needed a stronger dose, and I was put on to 30mg dose. Unfortunately I started having other issues on the higher dose, so I moved to another med instead. I don't think you using a cheaper brand would matter so much, it's the doseage. These drugs take about a week to get out of your system, so taking the lower dose may have taken a little longer for you to get the breakthrough acid. I would see how you go back on the 30mg I wouldn't change again without asking doctor first.

Thanks. I upped the dosage this morning. I'll give it a week or so and see how it goes. I've been taking Pepcid or Tums for the breakthrough symptoms.

I used to top up with gaviscon tablets - but now I use the gaviscon advance liquid if I'm having a bad day.
If you find your meds work for you - that's great, but if you find you need more top ups, then you need to review it with your doctor.

I'm hoping this settles down in a week or so. Getting worked up about it is undoubtedly adding to the symptoms!! I may try the gaviscon. Its worth a try!

Unfortunately, NONE of the acid controllers will 'fix' the underlying problem of a faulty LES. They DO provide relief for SOME people and unfortunately I'm NOT one of them. They will eventually cause stomach problems because we NEED that stomach acid to properly digest food so that we get the benefit of the nutrients.

I use:
Super Digestive Enzymes
30Billion Probiotics
HCI Betain with Pepsin

DGL for stomach lining tamer/protection

Use no acid controllers and no reflux, gerd, HB....HB when I was pregnant 51 yrs ago...


Use Fresh lemon in about everything....lemon once gets into our bodies, turns to alkalizer...

Baking soda now and then if stomach feels off, which it does not very often.....

Use baking soda in my coffee grounds for 2 cups of organic coffee I drink daily. Cuts the acid....use a couple squirts of fresh lemon too in my coffee brew...and some coconut oil, love my CO. J
