Cancelled operation and worries!

Hi sorry to hear you have had your op rescheduled.

I had my operation performed as day surgery too. I think the surgeon who is also the top guy in the area only ever performs them as day case. In my instance I was scheduled for surgery and on the ward eith one other fundoplication patient, 2 gall bladder removal and 3 gastric bands patients. I couldn't believe this guy was due to perform surgery on us all in one day! Myself and the other fundo were operated on first due to the fact it was the most tricky surgery apparently and would have longer on the ward after. The "bands" and "gall bladder"were all sat up and eating and chatting way before me and the other women despite going down after us. I'm Sure it will probably be a similar arrangement so you have a few hours to "come too" I'm sure if they feel it's necessary to keep you overnight they will.
Try not to worry too much I'm sure it will all go well and to plan and you may even want to be at home, I think hospitals are bloody nosy places to try and recover. Lots of luck.

The whole run up and preparation isn't it. I'm sure you willbe one of the first and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed they stick to the date and you are home and recovering very soon. Keep us posted. All the best

I think they will probably keep you in. Have they told you to take an overnight bag? My op was complete by 1 and I was still zonked by 5pm when they were shoving me out of the door. No way you can surgery in the afternoon and be discharged by 5! I'd give them a ring to question it.

Can understand where you are coming from, very frustrating for you, particularly as you have planned for care etc. ahhhhhh.

Ive had 3 ops in 12 months and have been so very very lucky they all went to plan with dates etc I'm sure I won't be so lucky 4th time plus I have to travel 2 1/2 hours to Cambridge to have my redo should be interesting journey home!

It's difficult to take this in when you are so near! Got most things prepared now. I was lucky to get the call when I was still at work - otherwise that would have been awful! It's good for them - as I will be in work another 2 days before surgery. My problem now is I can't switch off - I'm so scared they will cancel again. At least if you are in a morning session - you are much less likely to be sent home. I should be sleeping (it's almost 3am here) but I can't!

I'm thinking about you as your new surgery date arrives. Soon this part will be over and you can concentrate on recovery! Good luck and try to get a good night's rest, if that's at all possible.

Hi Sweetie, sorry to hear about your troubles. Let's hope this one goes ahead! The reason I wasn't actually first on the list was because they guy before me had been cancelled on 3 times, so let's hope its common practice to make those a priority!

It's interesting to see that you'll be having your operation as a day case. I had my toupet done in Leicester on the 3rd of Feb and I'm almost fully recovered and back at work now. I actually spent the night and went home the next day. They wouldn't discharge me until I proved I could eat something (took me 15 minutes but I managed a muller light!) and I was made to have my urine output measured all night. I was also on a Haartmans drip constantly, much to my annoyance as this made me pee a lot and walking to the bathroom coupled with having to use my stomach muscles to pee was particularly challenging!

I didn't actually come out of theatre until about 7PM after going in at 4:30PM, so they probably couldn't have discharged me even if they wanted to. Apprently the damage to my oesophagus was worse than they thought so it took longer? Not exactly sure what that entails but I haven't seen the surgeon since that day!

Obviously it's all very subjective to how you react to the procedure and I would have gone home if they'd have let me, but I was home before 24 hours had even passed and they sent me away with a bottle of codeine mixture which was all I really needed. From my personal experience I reckon it could be done in a day easily enough, proviced you've got the appropriate form of pain relief. It's what you do afterward that's the most important, and I'm sure you're already well clued up on what you've got to do as regards aftercare and diet, why else would we be on here right? ;)

Thanks for the insight JB. I haven't any idea what time I'll be operated on yet - only know I have to be in hospital for 11.30am. My work colleague tells me the day ward stays open until 10pm - so I could be sent home at 10pm yet! The stress of everything being moved about has not been good. I'm still not out of the woods yet. My fear with afternoon surgery - is surgery over running or someone who should have been turfed out can't be - and you have no bed.......
I can't help but think I should have had my surgery today - and I haven't. I feel side lined and insignificant.

Had my toupet 270 fundo done yesterday and like JB - I had an unforeseen problem (typical for me) I had a part of my stomach adhered to my spleen - so they had a little repair to do to that! Because of this I was kept in - and was glad of that as the pain in my shoulders was horrific! In the recovery room they keep putting warm blankets on my shoulders, which helped, but once I got moved to the ward I was given pain relief - and I was quite surprised - I was ok with paracetamol and codiene - managed to avoid the oramorph! The lovely nurse gave me a pill crusher too - as I had a tablet to take that I was too frightened to swallow whole. The great thing about the toupet is the ability to belch - and that you can start on a sloppy diet - not liquids only - so I had weetabix drowned with milk - used to have this as a kid - forgotten how much I like them! One positive thing I have noticed almost instantly is losing the metallic taste I have had for long enough!

Today has not been too bad - shoulders a bit better, had some nice sloppy food, and had a walk - but not very far, I tire really quickly and tend to do things in bursts. I am feeling the cuts in my stomach today - but that's only to be expected. Finding not doing much a bit tedious - but I do realize I can't do a lot - and the pain meds can make you a bit woosey!
