As some of you may have seen from my posting in the last couple of months I had a Toupet Fundoplication on the 3rd of February. Well it's six weeks later and I'm sorry to say it has not worked.

The heartburn started last week around Wednesday and continued on until Friday, and that was with chomping on Gaviscon tabs every 4 hours or so. I finally gave in and had to take some Ranitidine on Friday, only 75mg but I still feel pretty defeated. That seemed to do the trick until today (Wednesday) and it's back with a vengeance.

I'm not going to lie I was pretty distraught at the time and thought of having to go through the recovery again was and still is pretty daunting, however after having a few days to think about it I guess it isn't the end of the world. I'm not going back on PPI's that's for certain, not now I've tasted life without the side effects again.

I'm not sure what's going to happen next. I'm due to see the surgeon any time soon to go over it all. My highest hope is I won't have to go through all the tests again to prove my reflux and he'll just tighten up the wrap. I know the only option left might be a full Nissen but that's very much a final resort for me. I guess I'll just have to grit my teeth and take the Ranitidine until then.

Thanks for all the support, it means a lot. I'll keep this thread updated if anything changes.

I really hope they can sort you out ASAP. Let me know how it goes - I've had the same kind of wrap as you!

Cheers Sweetie, the success rates for the Toupet are almost as high as the Nissen so I'm sure you'll be fine. This is just typical of my life, I kind of expected it hah!

I just replied to you on another feed. But, now I see you've had the Toupet and it may be too early for you to be sure that it failed. I had my revision from a toupet to a nissen about 4 months ago and felt acid filling my mouth upon waking from the anethesia! I have been taking so many different PPI's and nothing seems to be working to control the reflux so now I'm beginning to wonder if maybe my wrap is too tight and I the food is getting stuck and not going through, thus, causing a lump in the back of my throat and difficulty swallowing. I'm really trying to be patient and positive and keep thinking this procedure worked the second time. Maybe it just takes more time to heal?
How are you doing today? Any improvements? I think for you, it really is too early to say that it was a failure. Give it some time, and hopefully the swelling will go down and it will resolve and you'll be off all the meds. We all need to support each other through this! I'm American but living over in France right now!

I don't think it's failed in the traditional sense, it's definitely still there as I can feel food getting stuck if I don't chew enough. I just don't think it's tight enough, since as soon as the swelling went down the symptoms returned. Its controllable with Ranitidine but I can't go more than 2 days without re-occurring symptoms. I point blank refuse to take PPI's again, those and the Metoclopramide have pretty much wrecked my body. Funny how they didn't mention the tardive dyskinesia when I started them!

I thought the same thing when I decided to have my toupet redone to a nissen but just be aware that in my case, my reflux and pain has never been this bad in the 29 years that I've been suffering from GERD (started after a twin pregnancy where my twins were 7 pounds each and I'm only 5'2", 110 pounds). I vomited repetitively and had to be hospitalized to be fed through IV during my pregnanacy too so that's when all my GERD/HH started...So, just want you to be aware of the risks of being worse off than before and not having a choice whether to take the drugs or not. If I don't try to control the acid, my esophagus which already has stage 3 esophogitis could keep progressively getting worse and according to my Gastroenterologist, "you can't leave it like that". So, now I find myself in a terrible bind...more surgery doesn't look like an option since my insides are thrashed from so much cutting and adhesions and this nissen didn't work. I did have one of the best surgeons at the American Hospital of Paris so some of it depends on your body and what they find in there. I have yet to go through all the exams again to find out specifically what went wrong. So for now, I'm just trying to find combos of PPI's, H2 blockers and natural remedies that can help manage my symptoms which are horrible and have definitely affected my life in a negative way.

When I just reread your entry, you said that foods were getting stuck. Perhaps it's already too tight and what you're mistaking for reflux might actually be fermenting food that's not passing through. It might just resolve with time. When I had my toupet, food didn't get stuck going down. It's usually much easier to eat. You still have to be careful and chew everything up, but with a Nissen, it's way worse. Everything gets stuck for me, even tiny little PPI caps. It's awful.

Anyway, best of luck to you and keep us posted on what you decide. By the way, what is Metoclopramide? What was that prescribed for?
